Is Obama right that we need a longer school year? (Freep this poll)
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | September 30, 2010 | Editorial Board

President Barack Obama says we need a longer school year if we want our public school graduates to be more competitive in the world.

He said: "We now have our kids go to school about a month less than most other advanced countries. And that month makes a difference. It means that kids are losing a lot of what they learn during the school year during the summer." He added that children from poor and low-income families suffer even more than others during the long summers because they may not have access to books, educational summer programs and other activities that will stimulate learning.

Another poll where the negatives for Big Dummy can be split. The third choice should be changed to: What makes Obama such an expert on education? He thinks there are 57...58 states.

2 of the 3 choices are NO. This should be interesting.

Yes, they do need more time in school. We want kids to compete in the global economy then they need a better education. I drive by my local Kumon on Sundays and the place is packed with Indian and Pakistani kids whose parents demand that they work hard and get ahead.

longer school years are chiefly wanted by those who rely on school to be a babysitter whilst both parents work. they won’t hbve to arrange daycare for summer if the little burndens are taken care of by school.

No, we do not need to increase the school year. What is needed is for public education to get back to the business of education instead of indoctrination and emotional curriculum. We spend way too much time and money on activities which do not involve learning to read, write, or compute.

The problem is NOT summer vacation. Shoveling more garbage school days at them won’t make it better. It’ll just be more wasted time.

Sidwell is doing such a great job his daughter nearly failed her science test.

I asked a store employee recently where air freshener would be located. She answered “Like room spray?” Like? Like? What the hell is it with that word! It is annoying. And isn't “air freshener” descriptive enough?

if teh schools spent less time pushing a l;eftist social agenda, they’d haev plenty of time to teach our shildren what they need to succeed.
if you have the child spend more time in school, they’ll simply puch more leftism into them, and the kids will still be mush.
besides, if the kid goes to school all ths time, that puts him/her in state custody more and more until the leftists can justify removing the kids from home permanently.

Right. Libraries shut down for the summer as does the Internet. Parents, relatives and friends of these families also shut down and cannot do all that educational stimulative work they do while school is in session. If only there wasn't a summer break to interrupt all those focused like a laser students.

Of course, the questions are loaded. The “No” answer includes irrelevant commentary that is designed to intentionally prevent people from choosing it. On a simple question like that, the only answers needed are “Yes” and “No”.

Stick THIS article on Facebook or whatever, and see the Obamanation’s numbers plummet with the younger generation.

Those people who approve of the idea probably use the school as a day care center because both parents - or the single parent - works during the day.

He is an expert on Communism, but knows nothing about American or, for that matter, world history. As for the school year, before we lengthen the year, how about breaking the teachers unions and getting a decent and honest days work out of these failures masking as “good’ teachers of our children!!! How about those apples, Mr. “anti-American” POTUS Obama!!!

I am not in favor of having kids in the hands of the teachers union anymore than legally mandated, and even then, private/Catholic school is superior, or home schooling..

maybe if they cut out sex/condom/homosexuality teachings oh, and "diversity" teaching, there might be enough time in the school year to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic....

they just need to be taught the right things during the traditional school year.....the 3 “R’s” instead of self esteem, black studies, environomentalism, etc. It’s no coincidence that education in American went to heck in a handbasket @ the same time jimmah formed the department of education

More school days only make sense *if* you believe that schools are already nearing peak efficiency, and now the problem has become not enough time to compete.

There are giant reforms to make before they mess up summer vacation. And the year around is mostly driven by the sick partnership of people who want free day care, and by the education community who wants more days to indoctrinate.

My kids do fun things on the weekends and during the summer. They go to church on Sundays.

They also score better than most.

Last year, my daughter got 4th place representing her private school in a math Olympics with a bunch of other private schools. We’re in San Jose, and so there are plenty of Asian kids here.

My son is smart, but there are smarter kids at his school. The thing is that they can’t do presentations. They are horrible at them. My son does theater, and he is very comfortable getting up in front of people. He’s the go to guy for group presentations.

I think kids should be well-rounded.
