Officials became aware of the incident Wednesday when an investigator from the state Children, Youth and Families Department alerted deputies about children who were having nightmares and reported seeing the dog's head removed.

He should have been charged with child abuse. There was a story earlier about a man who killed his girlfriend's puppy from an electrical cord.
Guy deserves a medal if that pit bull bit his kid.
Not a prison term.
Against a pit bull, a chainsaw about evens the odds.
I have a friend whose dog took a nip at his kid,
took doggie out and blew his brains out, and rightly so.
What the hell has gone wrong with America?
$100 fine for animal cruelty would have been proper.
Now the taxpayers have to feed and house this guy for YEARS!!!

I really hate pit bulls but a chainsaw? Whatever happened to a bullet? (I guess if he was in city limits that would be a bit of a pickle....) Anyway there could have been a more humane way of taking him out. I’m not mad he killed the dog but the way he did it.
I have had three different occasions to experience how dangerous these dogs are, all three were friends dogs, and all of them tried to bite or maul my daughter. (No longer friends with any of these people)I have seen completely docile pit bulls, too, but I don’t totally buy the ‘it’s the way they’re raised’ bit. To a degree, yes. But this breed can be trouble. They need to be handled and trained carefully, which, the average stupid thugs and white trash imbeciles who have them around ‘to look badass’ do not do. I’ve seen enough of it personally to testify to that.
Incompetents couldn't do it with a good ol fashioned throat slashing so they did it with a chainsaw.... in front of a bunch of kids.
While the dog needed to die, a chainsaw (and the kids) made what should have been a humane enactment of frontier justice into a gory scene best left to Hollywood.
Hard to agree with the sentence of 8 years, but really, a chainsaw.... in front of a bunch of children?
The custom used to be (maybe still is) that you call the sheriff and he handles the problem with a gunshot or calls some other authority. Makes sense.
But the shut up part only works if you didn't blow doggies brains out in front of a bunch of kids!
Had to put down my dog recently, dying of a brain tumor. Dug a hole out at my brother's country place. Topical application of a lead ‘pill’ to the back of the head. I miss that dog so much! But I didn't do it in front of any children! It was traumatic enough for all involved already!
The charge itself only has a maximum 18 month sentence.
He got 8 years because he has a criminal record already. He could have been put away for up to 15 years.
