Right now I think the dearest wish of the Democrat apparatchik would be Hillary v. Romney in 2012.
The Democrats would lose most of the blacks, the Republicans would lose most of the conservatives, the mushy middle might be evenly split. The Democrats would be back in the fight.

There is not a body in my circle of family and friends that will pull the lever for this candidate. Not one.
I agree that the democrats want Romney as an opponent, but I think that is because he is almost a democrat anyway. They believe that if Hillary lost to him, Romney would be nearly as good as Hillary for all their causes. So it would be no great loss to them. (Same situation as we had with Obama/McCain in 2008.)
But I believe if Romney is the choice, there is no way Hillary loses the blacks. Bill Clinton, the first black president, would win them over for her. Romney would be attacked on his church’s former stand on blacks and with the racist statements in the book of Mormon. All of which would energize the blacks to vote. Romney would have to denounce the book of Mormon or abandon all hope of getting any black person to vote for him.
Your scenario would probably work as you stated with Huckabee as the nominee rather than Romney since Huckabee is both hated by conservatives and is known for having a good relationship with blacks.

I don't think the Dems would like that matchup at all, precisely because the middle would be in play. To win, they need the R's to nominate a polarizing candidate who can be marginalized among the political middle.
