I remember reading in the paper 15+ years ago. It’s a curious story because I’d never heard of this.
Some local guy was taking his rifle to the Gunsmith because it wouldn’t work.
He put it in the back seat of his car, barrel facing him and it went off blowing his guts out. He died.
I wonder if it was a Rem 700?
A guy was transporting a rifle in the back seat that was somehow aimed at him in that confined space & he left it loaded, to boot?

Yes, I hope this scares a few people into putting their short-action 700s on consignment at my local gunshops. I'll happily accept the "risk".
