So off yourself, I’m not giving up until its fixed and the idiots are gone.

but why did so many go to China?

you don't remember the 'bubba' years - and the tons of campaign money he got - illegally?

You don't think they gave it for nothing, do you ?

BTW - the wind turbines are all made in China - and shipped over here. That helps our economy and jobs, doesn't it...

Hmm.. Could be. They’re certainly not doing this to help Palin, Newt or Romney.

Or they may be tearing Obama down now just so they can build him back up again in time for the ‘12 election. You know, so he can have an “accomplishment” on his record to run on. The MSM loves redemption stories.

LOL! You will be waiting a long time. Even if we have a mega blowout on Tuesday - it won’t matter. The Dems/elites/Saudis control US TV networks and they will protect the elites/Dems/muslims.

Maybe someone at See BS has finally concluded that Obama and his leftist cronies are actually after all the money in the country including theirs!

I smell Hillary calling in some favors at CBS. How opportune.

meanwhile the Singer treadle sewing machines made in early 40’s are what anthropologists might call a “climax design.”

1940??? that's a youngster.

I have a 1896 Singer Sphinx model - my great grandmother's - in perfect condition. It sews better than any of the new machines I ever had. It's in the full cabinet with 4 drawers - here's the Sphinx model machine itself

this is how it looks closed

Lots of nuke plants good; even better once someone revokes Carter’s exec order banning breeder plant to consume their “waste.’ If an article claiming synthetic oil from coal could be made for about $30/barrel that may prove to be another good option. Any real world cost effective competition for oil also hits the jihadists in their wallets.

OMG! I learned to sew on an old Singer that looked just like that, case and all. It was my grandmother’s, she died in 1942. After I married and moved away my father got tired of stubbing his toe on the machine when he got up at night. He carried it out to the curb and the garbage truck took it away. When I came back home and discovered what he had done, I sat down and cried.

I have one of these and yes it does a better job of sewing than the new ones. Belonged to my grandmother and she used to make dresses for me out of feedbags. Just finished sewing all my grandson’s Boy Scout patches on his new shirt. He loves to bring the neighborhood kids over to watch when I am sewing.

I think we can recover and become great again. But the international socialists are going to fight it at every turn.

Oh, wow. I recognize that Singer. My friend in first grade had one in his house. I remember playing with the, uh, pedal? His mom sewed through her fingernail once. Not while I was messing with it, though. I think I can remember how she would use the wheel on the right to help slow it down rapidly and then to make slow stitches while turning the cloth until she’d get to another straightaway and could let fly.

I would have cried too - after I kicked him in the shins.

That said - there are a surprising number still showing up for sale - especially on ebay - and range all over in prices - you can still find one, if you watch for a VERY reasonable price.

On the farm, it was in the bedroom - very often were - but I keep mine in the living room as it's my “pride” piece of furniture (I grabbed these pics off the net - it would take to much time to take, download, edit and then post my own for this thread ;o)..) But this is my model exactly - the cabinet in oak - can't get much sturdier or nicer than that.

Keep track on Google AND to maybe avoid heavy shipping costs - keep track of any local/state listings under antiques, maybe put an ad out yourself?

It’s truly amazing and a testament to the workmanship that used to be the norm that so many of these machines are still around - and working!(How many things made today do you think will still exist, let alone work, in another 114 years? that would be 2124! ahhaha))

What a beautiful machine. But it has a straight bobbin, right? Round bobbins (I think) weren’t developed until sometime in the late 20’s? Thanks for pic.

“pedal?”

treadle ;o)

yup. Best control, best sewing and very soothing - the steady rocking with your feet on the treadle

“...I think people predicted NAFTA would result in a lot of jobs going to Mexico and some certainly did but why did so many go to China?...
Good question. I don’t know.

Labor so cheap that even with tariffs companies still profit perhaps? I’m assuming there are tariffs on goods imported from there.”

This has bothered me for some time. Why would stuff be so cheap from Chine unless there is a fix in somewhere. The shipping costs should — one would expect — would add to the cost. I’ve often wondered why the greenies haven’t pointed out the energy costs in shipping boatloads of cheap consumer goods which are generally of poor quality and soon discarded and replaced. Why is every pair of shoes, jeans, pliers, pots and pans manufactured in China and shipped 2,000 miles? How can they possibly believe that the whole of the US would be sitting at desk jobs counting stuff and as a nation — or even georgraphic region — not produce anything and pay our bills?

Shipping costs have come down and labor there is peanuts.

Problem with shipping all these jobs overseas or to Mexico — there’s no middle class left in the United States to buy anything. I guess Americans can head south of the border since they believe in being friendly to immigrants.. or is that just their immigrants??
