Norwegian Navy Receives Fast Patrol Boat

02 November 2010

The Royal Norwegian Navy has taken the delivery of the second Skjold fast patrol boat (FPB), P962-Skudd, as part of a six-ship programme led by DCNS.

The less-than-50m-long Skjold Class FPBs are heavily armed boats that include eight anti-ship missiles and a 76mm gun that can engage several targets at once at ranges exceeding 12km.

Skjold FPBs are designed for patrolling Norway's littoral waters and are equipped with communications and sensor suites for participation in international and Nato-led operations.

The first boat, P961-Storm, was delivered in September and the next four of the class are expected to be delivered before late 2011, according to Defpro.com.

The programme includes two Norwegian contractors with DCNS as combat system design authority and co-supplier.

Is that just a trick of the lighting on the photo, or does that thing really have a blunt bow like an old infantry landing craft?

It is a sea effect ship. Kind of like a hovercraft, but with rigid sides. The front and rear are flexible rubber skirts..

Ah, I see now, thanks! I was sitting here puzzling over how they could make a “fast” patrol craft with a bow that looked like it came off a Higgins boat...

The USCG tried these in the 80’s and finally scrapped them all with nothing to show but crewman with profound hearing loss and blown out knees. Hopefully they’ve solved the noise/vibration problems.

Now go vote!

You mentioned the USCG trying these. With all due respects to the Norwegians, fine people, my wife is of Norwegian descent (I must be careful here), why is this a Navy patrol boat? and not a Coast Guard patrol boat? Are litoral patrol boats the Norwegian Navy?

Which vessel class was that? I don’t recall any surface effect cats in the USCG.

(NOT hovercraft. NOT hydrofoils. NOT SWATH ships.)
