President Obama made more than 60 phone calls last night to Democrats up for reelection. As fate would have it, most of those calls were to those who lost, including outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who lost her majority.
As the night went on, the president and his aides watched candidates for whom they held out hope drown in a crimson tide.
Virginia Democrats Rick Boucher and Tom Perriello - gone. Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland - gone. Three presidential visits to Pennsylvania were not enough to save Rep. Joe Sestak's Senate campaign or five House Democrats. Another five Ohio House Democrats fell as well.
President Obama's own senate seat was won by Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill. Newly elected swing state governors in Ohio, Wisconsin, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Michigan will be working to help the president's 2012 opponent.
"Bloodbath," emailed one top Democrat as election returns made it clear that White House hopes to contain the damage to a 50-seat net Republican gain were for naught.
President Obama is said to be introspective about the returns, though the loss of the House was not a surprise. He will be "conciliatory" at a 1 pm ET press conference.

Agreed. I have never seen so much hand wringing over such a decisive victory.
You are correct. It was a decisive victory, especially so in a mid-term election. I can’t understand complaining about Barney Frank winning. Can’t stand the guy myself, but his constituents are his constituents. In some areas of the country, you can’t cure willful stupidity.
A lot of America is waking up. Last night’s results confirm that fact.
I'm actually glad that a Republican will not be there to take the blame when California collapses under its own welfare entitlements.
Suck it, Gov. "Moonbeam" = Howard Dean as a lifelong pot-head.

“
If he called them...
I bet those were some fun calls to deposed Ike Skelton (34 years in
Congress) and Robin Carnahan (failed US Senate run).
I still have to pinch myself to believe the outcome.
Obama has probably retired to a bunker (”undisclosed location)
to sleep off last nights electoral results.
Wouldn’t you love to see the Republican controlled house investigate Fwank and build an ethics (if not criminal) case against him and at the very least censure him... could happen. He will certainly be under greater scrutiny as the chairman of the banking committee. Let us hope...
“In public and private, Mr. Obama has expressed skepticism of the genuineness of House Republicans’ desire to work in a bipartisan way, but he will proceed in a “good faith” way, an official said.”
This closing paragraph tells us all we need to know. Everything will be the fault of the Republicans.
He will still be his usual narcissistic self.
‘In some areas of the country, you canât cure willful stupidity.’
Want another example? In Dallas, the congressional district of the disgraced Eddie Berniece Johnson reelected yet again her last night. Even when presented with the evidence, they STILL vote for the crook. Can’t cure stupid.
