The defense was non-existent. Yes, he didn't need to lower the response to Kanye's gutter, but a general defense that the President of the United States is no racist and that the leaders of the opposition party should repudiate it (ever notice how the Dems do this all the time?), would have been very appropriate (and unfortunately necessary).
