The Olin Corp. announced Wednesday that it will suspend production of centerfire ammunition at its plant in East Alton and re-locate the manufacturing operation to Oxford, Miss.
The move comes less than 24 hours after members of the union representing over Olin 800 workers rejected concessions that would have allowed them to keep their jobs.
"Our focus always has been on ensuring that we continue producing high-quality products for our customers in an increasingly competitive market," president and CEO Joseph D. Rupp said in a prepared statement.
"While I am disappointed that employees represented by the International Association of Machinists chose to reject a proposal that would have allowed us to remain competitive in East Alton, we look forward to expanding our existing operations in Mississippi."

Olin Corp. said Wednesday it will move its Winchester Centerfire ammunition operations and 1,000 jobs from East Alton, Ill., to Oxford, Miss., after a union twice rejected concessions that could have kept the jobs here.
The relocation is expected to take place over several years.
The company told the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in August that it was considering relocating operations to Oxford to save $30 million a year.
Mississippi is providing an incentive package to help Olin build a new 500,000-square-foot facility next to the company’s existing building in Oxford.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello and Sen. Dick Durbin offered Olin an investment package “that was extremely attractive” and would have kept the jobs here, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Joseph Rupp said. “Unfortunately, without the labor costs savings and efficiencies that the IAM proposal would have provided, the state incentives alone would not have allowed us to remain competitive for the long-term at our current location in Illinois.”
Olin’s profit in the third quarter fell 19 percent to $31.8 million, down from $39.4 million in the third quarter of 2009.

Unions are too damn big!
I believe such a law was passed in “Atlas Shrugs”, with a rather Orwellian name.
At least with unions in the private sector, like this, you can see the free market at work to deal with unreasonable demands. The real problem is with unions in the public sector.
Good move. All capitalists should move their businesses to red states and totally devastate the blue states economies.
Unions are too corrupt. I can not think of a single union which has preserved the retirement funds of their members but have instead spent tens of millions and perhaps hundreds of millions to elect democrats, who now seek to force the rest of taxpayers to refund the spent union funds! Unions, corruption on an institutional scale now usurping the sovereingty of the American voter with corruption and vote cheating.

I have no sympathy for the union thugs who feel they’re so entitled that they would drive their employers away or out of business rather than concede anything. I’m sure the people in Mississippi will be thrilled for the 1000 jobs.

Does anyone know what the union was being asked to compromise on and refused? Something like they were going to have to pick up $25/month for family health insurance or put 1% into their pension plan? Just wondering...
This is how it always is with the unions, they don’t have a vested interested in the success of the company or taking care of the customers. Here is another link, the company warned the employees and they choose to have no job at all versus working with the company. I hope nobody writes an article in sympathy of those union dummies:

Leave it to union members to not only slaughter the golden goose, but to then defecate on the carcass.
