Looks like the coast was clear.
It looks like a jet contrail, but that’d have to be one hell of an optical illusion to make it appear at that angle. It would not be difficult, given the exact time this was spotted, to correlate it with high-altitude air traffic in the area and see if something was coming through.
Interestingly, the Los Angeles ARTCC (Air Route Traffic Control Center) did apparently have a Notice to Airmen closing a portion of offshore airspace. I can’t vouch for this, but it was posted on that San Francisco CBS link that’s in this thread:

That picture does, actually, look like a con trail. But it does not explain the big flying saucer hiding a part of the upper trail!
About halfway through the video and aircraft comes into view at a much close distance that the video feed.
If it had been an aircraft would that show up on radar records?

I think the question on the NOTAMN is that is was ISSUED AFTER THE LAUNCH that took place, not before.
Well, I’m not a pilot, but...
“1011092000” and “10111100100” are the dates and times in Greenwich Mean Time—so, 11/9/10 2000 GMT (12:00 noon PST) to 11/10/10 0100 GMT (5:00 pm PST). If the contrail appeared after 5:00 pm, then this NOTAM may not mean anything.
W537 is probably the code that defines the no-fly area over the weapons center. I don’t know what those CAE numbers are but “oceanic transition” is where an aircraft is handed off from the Los Angeles ARTCC to Oceanic controllers, where it leaves radar coverage.
So basically, they’re shutting down a section of airspace from 12:00 to 17:00 local yesterday. Is that anywhere near this? I have no clue.

Ellsworth could offer little in the way of speculation about the projectile’s origins, beyond supposing that it looked to be an American show of force, but he did classify it as “a big missile.” Various reports say that the missile was launched roughly 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.
I’ve been in my brother-in-law’s Citation at 45,000 feet. I gotta admit that from that altitude commercial airliner contrails look completely different.
The still photo’s I’ve seen of this thing DO look like contrails. If there is no video of an actual rocket taking off and creating the contrail, I’m gonna go with the contrail explanation.
