Holding signs reading "Free my Future" and "Stop Education Cuts," up to 50,000 students stomped through the streets of London today, protesting both a tuition hike and deep cuts to the education budget.

The protests turned violent Wednesday afternoon with protesters and police fighting in front of the Conservative Party's headquarters, the Millbank Tower.

Students shattered the glass windows of the tower and hundreds occupied the building for a time. Activists threw water, paper, and even a fire extinguisher from the roof of the political headquarters

Imagine fighting for the right to pay too much for a useless degree in post-colonial studies or something. Later they’ll be rioting for the jobs they aren’t qualified for because of their useless humanities degrees. Years from now they’ll be rioting for the retirement benefits they never earned because they spent their lives un- or under-employed.

The University bubble desperately needs to be deflated.

it's commonly the case throughout Europe that students have very low or nonexistent tuition for college level work. In some countries they get a subsidy from the government that's about the same as unemployment payments.

This is a TRIPLING of tuition. I would imagine the Brits thought it inequitable to triple the cost of tuition (whatever it was) while everybody else skates by without serious revisions in whatever it is they are getting.

Frankly, I have no idea what UK students pay, nor any idea what education actually costs, but an increase this steep suggests that someone thought to turn tuition into a tax on students.

Kind of like the Obamakkkare tax on artificial legs, replacement joints, caps, crowns, hair implants, tans and diabetic test materials.

Just another reason why we know the Leftwingtards are mentally ill and should be stripped every bit of power before they destroy the world.

I don’t even think these people are capable of thinking anymore. What’s the point of college in a place like the UK? To get a better job that pays more so you can pay it all to the government in taxes, VAT taxes and more taxes? For why? Get on the dole, it’s the new way to prosper in the UK. I read the stories every week in the UK papers.

If the purpose of education was to actually educate people, the entire college curriculum could be filmed, uploaded to YouTube and watched by the entire world for free.

This is one of the few times I can recall where socialists are concerned about the cost of education, one way or another.

Funding is another issue - i.e. - when they don't get enough government monies (that's us) to pay their salaries and new buildings. Then all hell breaks loose.

The ABC video is taking forever to load. It doesn’t look like the same video posted on Drudge. The riot isn’t about tuition, it’s total anarchy, and it’s frightening.

They need to reduce the payments to education an additional amount to cover the damage.

The cap is around £3300. The government now wants to let universities charge market rates, although there will be penalties for charging more than £7000. The shortfall will be made up by governmental student loans, paid as a percentage of income once income rises above a certain level, currently £15,000 but possibly rising to £21,000, for a maximum of 25 years (likely to be changed to 30).

You are not allowed to pay these loans early- it’s treated like a payroll tax.

I have no problem with it. I worked my butt off and I paid my tuition. Took me 8 years for a 4 year degree.

No sympathy here. Sorry.

Let's say you want to pay no more than in-state tuition, live at home in your mom's basement, and yet get a useful degree from a major university.

You can do that on the internet at Indiana University.

University of Maryland has a similar program.

Eventually that's how college is going to be done and today is the day to start doing it that way.

That’s strange. So they are for market forces in pricing, but against market forces in repayment? Bad combination.

I suspect that if people paid what their education was truly worth that the cost would come down considerably. Get rid of all the folks at the trough, the unionised folks, etc. and you might have enough left over to actually educate people.

I can tutor a student one on one for about one percent what they pay in tuition for a year at the top schools. And I get results. So why does it cost so much for a class?
