Latino kids now majority in state's public schools
San Francisco Chronicle / sfgate.com ^ | Saturday, November 13, 2010 | Will Kane, Chronicle Staff Writer

Latinos now make up a majority of California's public school students, cracking the 50 percent barrier for the first time in the state's history, according to data released Friday by the state Department of Education.

Almost 50.4 percent of the state's students in the 2009-10 school year identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino, up 1.36 percent from the previous year.

In comparison, 27 percent of California's 6.2 million students identified themselves as white, 9 percent as Asian and 7 percent as black. Students calling themselves Filipino, Pacific Islander, Native American or other total almost 7 percent.

While the result was no surprise to educators, experts say the shift underscores the huge impact Latinos already have on California's politics, economy and school system.

That influence will only grow as Latino parents - now in the majority - realize many of the schools their children attend are underfunded, said Bruce Fuller, a professor of education and public policy at UC Berkeley.

"It turns upside down how we think about California students," he said.

"A lot depends on the extent to which Latino parents come together and organize," Fuller added. "These are parents who historically have not had much political power. But as they are coming together and feeling their oats, they may organize around education."

Question: "Will they proudly fly the American flag? "

Answer: No.

Comment: Conquerers typically use their own symbols to demonstrate to the vanquished a change in control.

A couple of excerpts from the article:

In San Francisco, where an estimated one-third of public school students have a parent who was not born in this country, voters were asked this month to allow noncitizens to vote in school board elections. While Proposition D lost, 45 to 55 percent, the support the ballot measure received from civic leaders showed the growing concern about the role of immigrant parents in local schools.

Everybody bilingual?

Nearly 1.5 million students are English language learners, but many more still struggle in the classroom with difficult, subject-specific terms, he said.

“For example, if you are studying social science, understanding words like ‘justice’ and ‘beauty’ can be difficult,” he said. “In math, it can be even harder.”

Fuller, the UC Berkeley professor, suggested state educators look at language education in an entirely new way.

“If the majority of the population is becoming bilingual,” he said, referring to the growing Latino population learning English, “why shouldn’t the white minority also become bilingual?”

What? It’s not as if there aren’t any Spanish mathematicians out there. Why would mathematical concepts and terms be so difficult to understand if one’s first language is Spanish?

White dem politicians, who are currently happy to have the Latino vote, will find themselves replaced with Latinos in just a few more election cycles.

“For example, if you are studying social science, understanding words like ‘justice’ and ‘beauty’ can be difficult,” he said.

"Justicia." "Belleza." Golly, that was hard. Of course, this is San Franciso, and their idea of "justice" and "beauty" is probably very different from that of the average Latin American, or even the average Anglo-American. I attend a Spanish-speaking church service, but we agree on these basic things.

And of course math and science texts exist in Spanish, and anyone who is intelligent enough to learn the subjects themselves (which leaves out of a lot of teachers ...) can also memorize the necessary vocabulary.

Now consider that probably only half those latinos will complete HS and then be thrown on the unskilled labor market.
There are not enough skilled workers in CA now working at middle class jobs to support the taxes necessary to pay for all the education and govt programs. Unbridled illegal and chain immigration of illiterates has severely damaged the state.

True. Many, won't. In fact, some have complained of old Glory being on display:

13 year old with flag on bicycle rides across patriot hearts forever

Veteran Robert Alicea must be plum proud of his 13-year-old grandson, Cody.

Cody rode Old Glory into the hearts of patriots and made Veteran’s Day 2010 a Veteran’s Day to crown them all.

Cody had been flying the flag on the back of his bicycle for almost two months to show support for veterans like his grandfather who served their country.

Citing complaints from other students, officials at Denair Middle School told Cody he would no longer be allowed to display the flag—just in time for Veteran’s Day.

As fast as you could say, “Stars and Stripes”, a public outcry rang out from from across the fruited plain and the school soon backtracked.

Superintendent Edward Parraz says the school was trying to avoid racial tensions that stemmed from a “little issue” that arose when Hispanic students brought Mexican flags to school on Cinco De Mayo.

“That’s when it all kind of started, and I think it carried through so that when Cody started doing his flag everybody said well why isn’t he getting in trouble?” (FoxNews.com, Nov. 12, 2010).

.Teen Suspended for Removing Mexican Flag in Texas High School

After the events that took place at Live Oak High School in California where five boys were sent home on Cinco de Mayo for wearing shirts with the American flag on them, schools and parents are on edge around the nation.

A listener to Michael Berry’s radio broadcast in Houston Texas, called in to express her dismay with a Mexican flag being prominently displayed at her son’s school, Klein Collins High School.

The Texas Mom did the appropriate thing and called the school to complain about the display and request that it be taken down, however, the school failed to return her phone call.

The student, possibly upset from the actions in California and after his mother received no response, took the Mexican flag down himself.

The administration of Klein Collins didn’t take too kindly to the act. According to Michael Berry, the school, “pitched a fit, reviewed the surveillance tapes, and suspended him for 3 days.”

The young man is also being told he has to pay for a new Mexican flag.

Unrest over perceived preferential treatment toward Mexican-Americans continues to grow across the nation. Equally, anger is mounting within the Mexican-American community over Arizona and the national backlash to recent events.

Yesterday, 200 Hispanic students walked out of classes at Live Oak High School in an impromptu protest. They demanded “respect” from the school and community. As of yet, no disciplinary action as been taken against the students who disrupted school events and even closed the downtown area of Morgan Hills, California.

However, the students, upon their return from protesting, were led to an auditorium to voice their concerns to the school’s administration.

Isn't "multiculturalism" great? Different languages spoken/taught in school, different flags flying in the country, voting ballots in different languages and on and on.

So much for the "United" States of America.

I’ve always been surprised by the percentage of Blacks in California.

13% nationally, but just 7% in California.

Escalante was Bolivian or Peruvian, iirc. We have a lot of Peruvians (well, 8 or 10 families ;-) at my church, but I don’t think Bolivians are common.

Being from a Spanish-speaking background doesn’t keep a child from learning to read, write, or do math. They do all those things in Spain and Latin America! However, the public school of the United States don’t do that great a job with children from English-speaking families, either. Immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean have better educational outcomes than American blacks, and the reason isn’t their native language!
