A dog that fought off a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, saving the lives of several US soldiers, was euthanized by mistake by animal shelter staff in Arizona. An investigation was underway Tuesday into why Target was put to sleep at the Pinal County Animal Care & Control center. An unnamed employee was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures. The shepherd-mix dog was picked up last Friday after going missing from its owner Sgt. Terry Young's home in the San Tan Valley area, southeast of Phoenix. The dog, which was not microchipped or licensed with the county, was euthanized Monday.

Kitty. Palmetto Mason stated that the “it’s just a dog” crowd would show up and start crowing; NOT that he was of that mindset himself. Not at all.

“This was clearly not an ordinary dog.”

Probably not.

But even the most pedestrian, non-AKC mutt would probably allow himself to be torn to shreds defending the family he loves.

Unknown as to current process for marking DOD pups. As stated I was K9 from 72 to 74 and then cross trained to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Teams.... I would think a chip would be used by kennel masters now. But as stated... I’m not there anymore.

Hope yer well.....Stay Safe !

Thanks for the ping SandRat. I read about this on Drudge and felt very sad about it. This has happened in my town when an owner didn't get to the pound in time and those in charge made a mistake.

It's a very sad thing to have happen but then people in hospitals have had some tragic things done to them through someone’s error.

Quite sad. What idiots our government employs. With so many good people needing jobs it’s a shame we can’t just dismiss this person and move on.

Aren’t you glad the “just a dog” was dealing with that suicide bomber instead of you?

Your remark is inappropriate and not appreciated or needed.

When you get a brain and some manners; come back.

I think you owe PalmettoMason an apology... Please read the post again. PM didn't say this was "just a dog."

I am both saddened and enraged. The latter emotion is directed to the yahoo who killed this dog. At the least they should be fired. I guess I’ll have to keep to myself what I would do.

This is something that is always in the back of my mind when I take my dog in for veterinary care and have to leave him overnight. I’m afraid that someone will screw up big time and euthanize him.
