The term “gate rape” has been used on the web site flyertalk.com since 2002 or 2003. The frequent flyers on that site used the term to describe the secondary screening that used to exist at the gate, right before you boarded the plane.
Even after clearing the WTMD (Walk Through Metal Detector) with no problem, “security” decided to nab every third or fourth person before he or she walked onto the jetway to get on their flight. Your carry-on was searched, often dumped upside down on a table, you were wanded, and sometimes patted down. It pissed frequent flyers off to no end. One reason it ticked them off: by the time they got on the plane, all the overhead bins were full.
When it was announced that the plane was ready for boarding, people in the know would hang back, wait for a “victim” to be picked by security for a secondary screening, and then rush on board the plane before the screener was done and ready for their next victim.
