133 LAX passengers refuse body scans and get pat-downs, TSA says
LA Times ^ | November 24, 2010 | Bob Pool

Of the 150,000 travelers who have so far gone through Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, 133 have opted out of the full-body scanners and receive enhanced pat-downs, according to officials.

Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration, said 17 of 19 body-scanning machines at LAX on Wednesday were operational. The scanners at Terminal 1 were off for at least part of the day, and Melendez said he didn't know why.

Many passengers paid little attention to the screenings.

What a bunch of dumbasses ! To have any effect, the passengers are supposed to refuse the bodyscans AND the
pat-downs. Until that happens, the system won’t be changed.

National Opt Out...according to their website was not to opt out of both, but just to opt out of the scanners and ask for a pat down instead. Here’s the link that explains their strategy:

Well frankly...I don't think a whole lot of people were looking forward to declining both and getting an $11K fine. The only way to protest in that regard is to NOT fly...PERIOD.

Did you do it? If not...its pretty brave to bash people who didn't opt out of both and get detained and fined when you aren't willing to do it yourself. Go book a flight...opt out of both...pay the HUGE fine...get detained...then you can bash people for not opting out of both.

A more sensible protest would be a flying boycott. The airlines going bankrupt would force a change in policy and nobody goes to jail. As for me, I’ve never flown, and I am certain now that I will never be tempted to do so.

Another post indicated numerous scanners are shutdown intentionally for the day. I suspect the TSA will claim the holiday came and went without delays (indicating the American public thinks the scanners are acceptable) rather than fess up that they had turned the machines off to avoid backlash. It's just good spin.

o...I don’t think so....I think the TSA are trying to FORCE people into the scans....it’s faster, plus creates a “print”....whereas the “pat downs” just make it harder for TSA to implement.

Here in Dallas the local news was blabbing on with a live report from DFW “wondering where the long lines are?” while showing some protesters outside the termanals. They were all but saying the "opt-out protest" had no effect.

Nice spin, but in the next breath he was reporting on “no lines all day.” They added that the same thing was occurring at Love Field.

No lines at DFW on the day before Thanksgiving? Yep. The live shot showed the place was empty.

Sounds to me a lot of folks are taking the BIG “optout” and they simply are not flying.

More to do with “progressive” supporters peddling the scanners financial interests.

From all on the inetrnet, seems like very few of the scanners OR grope-downs were being done anywhere, scanners roped off and regular checks. The tsa backed down and is just too chickenshite to admit it.

TSA=Gestapo

Next up:
1-Enhanced Body Scans for every mass transit modality; trains; subway; buses; ferry boats; etc. (currently under consideration)
2-All government buildings requiring EBS for entry: court houses; city, county state federal offices; Post Offices; Licensing offices. (currently being implemented)
3-Private highrise office buildings following the government lead. (currently being discussed)
4-Body Cavity searches included as an option: Comply with the radiation scan OR we'll do an ehanced pat down and depending on what we think we feel we'll do a strip search or a body cavity search. Opt out and suffer an $11,000 fine. (Inferred from TSA Director John Pistole's statement not ruling out body scans but that they were not being considered yet.)

People .... This is exactly how tyranny begins.

I don’t think it’s dumb.

Some people merely do not want to be irradiated. Many cancer patients [or former cancer patients] refuse to be x-rayed.

They may not even know or care about an opt out day.
