It may be apocryphal, but I recall a story about some European nobleman reacting to a perceived insult from a commoner by elaborately reciting all his notable and prestigious forebears and their historical importance and belittling the commoner's mean birth.

Supposedly the commoner's response was along the lines of: "You are indeed a descendant - but I am an ancestor."
