WASHINGTON, Dec. 1, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, and senior House and Senate Democrats were joined by jobless Americans at a press conference to protect unemployment insurance benefits for American workers. Below are the Speaker's opening remarks and closing statement, and additional facts on unemployment insurance:

Speaker Pelosi Opening Remarks:

"Thank you very much, Edrie [Irvine], for your generosity of spirit to share your personal story with us. It is your story and the story of many in this room, and many, many more across the country — you did what was right, you played by the rules, lost your job through no fault of your own, and we should have unemployment insurance at this very special time.

"But yesterday, the unemployment insurance expired. That means that unless we do something about it, by December 31, 2 million Americans will lose their unemployment insurance. The word is insurance — they paid into it.

"This is something that is not only good for these families; it's the right thing to do in a downturn in our economy. But it's also the right thing to do to grow our economy. Economists tell us that unemployment insurance — the non-partisan Urban Institute estimated that unemployment insurance returns $2 to the economy for every $1 spent. This is money that is needed by families to buy necessities, to heat their homes as Edrie said, and immediately injects demand into the economy — creating jobs.

"That's why we are here today to call attention to why this is necessary for America's working families, but what it also does for the economy. I'm so pleased to be here with the Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis ...

The first 26 weeks are funded by the employers. The other weeks after that are funded by general tax revenue.

Personally, I’m ambivalent about unemployment insurance. I just got a new job after a long layoff and the safety net did remove some of the incentive to find “anything.” On the other hand, I was able to get a better job than the one I lost last year.

Unemployment allowed me to wait for the right job, but there was no real enforcement of the job search requirement.

Proof positive all that Botox has gone to her brain...EMPLOYERS are the ones that pay into the federal/state unemployment fund on behalf of employees up to the first $7000 of pay. It a creation of Congress to fund something that was not intended to benefit the economy (in her own words). Once a former employee taps into their employers account (Could be multiple employers if the person has more than one job in a year) it is drawn down and the next year they are hit with a higher liability. Another benefit, like health care, gone awry thanks to the lifelong employees called Congress.

When unemployment benefits extend for longer than the amount of time it takes to find a job, they're no longer used to tide someone over between jobs -- they're being used to pay people not to work at the expense of those who are.

At 99 weeks, these unemployment benefits are already extended more than three times longer than the average amount of time (30.2 weeks) that it takes to find a job in today's economy.

The employees don’t pay the insurance, the employers do.

And these payments are in no way incorporated into wages and benefits, right? They come from a magic tree out back? And also the federal taxes the employees pay before their job gets shipped overseas, these don't really count when it comes to "paying into" the "insurance" extensions, right?

Hi , Spiltmilk.

your perseverance , persistence, and not giving up is really an inspiration.

I am almost in the same situation you are in. I could lose my self employment any time and am likely to do so soon. But I get no unemployment checks even if I do lose my source of income cause I'm self employed.

Still wondering how you are doing. what is your situation. I talked to you in a thread a few weeks ago. hope you get a job soon or find a solution for your problems. your perseverance , persistence and not giving up is really an inspiration. I wish I could help you and myself.

It’s the employers that pay into the unemployment insurance fund.

I too am self employed.

While my freelance work is up, my retail sales are almost nonexistent. Down about 60-80% depending what month I look at.

Gonna be a grim Christmas present wise.

And there is a thick envelope upstairs from my daughter’s first college choice. It isn’t open, and I am pretty sure its “good news.”

And I secretly hope its just more paperwork. I have no idea how we will pay for that. God will provide....I keep my head down and moving. It makes for a more difficult target to hit.
