Undocumented Immigrants Prepare to Leave Arizona
Latin American Herald Tribune ^ | December 10,2010 | Latin American Herald Tribune

PHOENIX – Faced with the unlikelihood that the federal government will pass an immigration-reform law any time soon, coupled with the toughening of Arizona’s state laws against illegal immigration, many undocumented aliens here are getting ready to go back to their own countries.

“The situation is getting more and more difficult, not only because it’s very hard to find work, but because you can no longer live in peace – you’re always afraid of being arrested by the cops,” Juan Martinez Ramos, an undocumented immigrant from the western Mexican state of Michoacan, told Efe.

The Martinez family is selling all the furniture in their two-room apartment in Phoenix in hopes of raising a little more cash.

“The American dream is over for us,” the father of three children, all born in the U.S., said.

The family hopes to leave the state by Dec. 21, in time to get back to Mexico for the Christmas celebrations.

Martinez, 42, who worked in construction for more than seven years, has been out of a job for a year, and during that time has survived doing “odd jobs” in private homes, such as repairing walls and roofs and installing windows.

“It’s not just the lack of work – now with the SB1070 law they want to make those of us without papers feel like criminals,” Martinez, who came to the United States 10 years ago crossing the Arizona desert on foot, said.

SB1070, which took effect in July, is the first in the United States to criminalize the presence of undocumented immigrants.

Though a federal judge temporarily blocked the most controversial provisions of the law including an article requiring local law enforcement to question the immigration status of people suspected of being undocumented, activists say that the impact has been tremendous among Arizona’s immigrant community.

Nice message to send. Ignore the law long enough and we will NOT reward your unlawful behavior by making that behavior legal.

Think of how much Mexico will be improved if all these hard-working, enterprising people go back there and help their native country advance.

So if we enforce our immigration laws, they work. Now to get to border security.

Hmm, the cost and drain on the state is lessened. The availability of jobs for Arizonans go up. Seems to be working as intended.

You're not an American. You don't deserve the American Dream if you're here illegally and it's paid for by stealing it from ME!

Make it harder to find work and even harder to get any sort of public entitlement and they’ll find living in the USA too costly. As it stands, I doubt these AZ illegals are going back to their home countries. Far too many freebies just accross the border in CA.

Geez, Senior Martinez ...why not stop being such a lily livered coward and ago home and create the MEXICAN DREAM — for yourself, for your family members, for your own countrymen ...and quit trying to take it from Americans illegally. You’ve broken our laws. Period. Time to go home. Well, there’s always the chance of having it if you’d just come here legally ...but I guess that’s for suckers.

Meanwhile, I make my way around town at least once a week, shopping for groceries and such, and I see all kinds of Latinos who look perfectly at ease. I don’t see the paranoia of someone who thinks he well be arrested for “looking Hispanic”, in spite of the fantasies of the scum-sucking mediots (and Jeb Bush).

Maybe, just maybe, because you ARE here illegally?

The Liberal Media never publishes stories on the Americans who lose their jobs to illegals...or lose their lives to them. Our media and politicians hate Americans

Burglar broke in through the window.
Burglar broke in through the back door.

Which is most guilty?

Funny how the omission of a few critical words can change the landscape. As I understand it, the law in question did not require local law enforcement to question the immigration status of people suspected of being undocumented. Only when an individual was stopped on other legal grounds did their immigration status come into question.
