No doubt it was stupid engineering.
But are you sure it was not constructed by unionists? Hard to believe that it was not.
The old Montreal Expos played in a roof-covered stadium,
Stade Olympique (have moved to DC of course). One time I was at an Expos game and for some reason the roof was taken off.
You look up and see the “funicular” (sim. to Pittsburgh inclines)
Mpls could check into the sort of design for the stadium in Indianapolis. It has a moveable roof. There are a gazillion pictures of the place so here’s the google.com search already done for your viewing pleasure: http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUS375&q=indianapolis+colts+stadium&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1344&bih=628
Minneapolis doesn’t get all that much snow. It’s drier, here, than it is out east. But every now and again, we get dumped on.
-——stupid engineers building on the cheap——
more likely lazy union maintenance types that failed to increase the interior pressure to resist the increased load.
re Olympic Stadium Montreal, from entry on Wikipedia:
>>In 1987, an orange-coloured Kevlar retractable roof was installed, finally completing the stadium a decade late; however, soon after it was put into use it ripped on several occasions due to a design flaw. In the months that followed, it was plagued by further rips and leaks during rain storms, bringing water down into the stadium...For the 1992 season, it was decided to keep the roof closed at all times. The Kevlar roof was removed in May 1998, making the stadium open-air for the 1998 season. Later in 1998, a $26 million opaque blue roof was installed which does not open.
“or build a new stadium”
The Vikings need something along the line of a “JerryDome”, with it’s retractable roof, but I don’t think the good citizens of MN are willing to lay down a cool billion to pay for it.
They can hook up either end of Al Gore to a pump and he’ll reinflate it in no time.
Here
s a video regarding how Indianapolis dealt with the PREVIOUS stadium: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2059662.ece
An update from a sports-media friend of mine on facebook:
>>NFL Network is reporting the dome can not be ready for Monday - league is now considering DETROIT as there is another headache - The Giants did not pack any cold weather gear
Tubeless tires are always a bit tougher to fix...
Perhaps a tanker of Slime?
It happened at the Pontiac Silverdome on March 4, 1985.
The roof was blown off and then it just sagged by the wire mesh of its framework. Only one of the roof’s panels was left intact while all the others had their fabric blown out.
If it gets played in Det. instead; maybe some fans will fly there, but if you plan on driving (via google maps):
Driving directions to Detroit, MI

BTW, how are those beach front villas on Lake of the Woods selling?
20 inches of snow isn’t that much here in Massachusetts. I assumed that Minnesota was similar, but it appears I was wrong. Our stadium is open, which I prefer. It’s also beautiful and unique. Many of the stadiums today have few distinguishing features, which is unfortunate.
Wish the roof had caved in on Minnesota Public Radio.

They need to bring the game back to New Jersey - still time to play the game Monday night there. The thing that sucks is that right after this game they have to prep for the Iggles on the 19th - hopefully we get out of this game with a big win - with the wind behind our backs and without getting too banged up.
Interesting. Thanks!
