I added the unless clause when my daughter confessed she had broken the rule with one of the class nerds. I knew the kid and knew she could beat him up, so I modified the rule slightly.

Agreed. There is too much emotion flying around and not enough rational thought as well. Maybe it is my libertarian side, but there has to be a time when we have to let our kids decide for themselves. Back in my grandfather's day and before, many people took up adult responsibilities when they were 14, 16 and so on. My grandfather quit school in 1914 and went to work at 13. In my own opinion though in stories like these, 16 as the age of consent is a good compromise, a compromise being a solution where no one is 100% happy yet it is workable.

Some Freepers fall into the trap where they want the government to do some of their work. As Pogo the Possum said a while back, "we have met the enemy and he is us." I have a high set of morals as my own standards, yet, I understand that the government cannot or should not be the enforcer on many of them. Things like that have to come from the bottom up, from ourselves. We need to teach our kids that.

Before making a judgement, I would need to know more facts. If it was my 17 year old daughter, I sure hope I taught her enough values for her to make the right decisions. I would also have to teach her that she is responsible for her actions and she woulds have to think prior to making life changing decisions. I against pre-marital sex as per my moral standards, but I understand some do not agree to that and/or fall off the wagon" as some would put it, so again, one has to instill responsibility and accountibility in the next generation. Then it is "by the grace of God, go I." Digressing, is this 57 year old man, is he a loser or does he have a good foundation? Does he have good moral/ethics? Are they together out of true love or is he just out to get another notch on his gun? If he is a good guy, well, the age difference is a bit pecular to some, but if he passes muster, then so be it. Given a choice, I'd take a well established, moral/ethical 57 year old, despite the age difference over the proverbial shiftless 18 year old heroin dealer anyday.

As to what this father did, he was acting on pure emotion not restrained by rational thought and he must pay the price. He, along with his buddies, assaulted and maimed another person who was within the law. German law does state that one can act in their own interest at 14, well that's a little young, IMHO, 16 is more like it, but again, they were within legal bounds. I know I might have made myself a target here, but government is a poor arbiter and enforcer for personal relations and many moral values, it all has to come from us, from the bottom up. We have been falling down on the job for many years and that is what make the fight harder. I just think that if we make laws for ever moral, when the left gets in, they can be turned on us as well.
