EU court orders Ireland to scrap anti-abortion law in move set to spark Catholic outrage

Ireland has been ordered to change their law banning abortion, likely sparking outrage from religious leaders. The European Court of Human Rights ruled today that the constitutional ban on abortion violates the rights of pregnant women to receive proper medical care in life-threatening cases. The judgment harshly criticised Ireland's long inaction on the issue.

The judgment from the Strasbourg, France-based court will put Ireland under pressure to draft a law extending limited abortion rights to women whose pregnancies represent a potentially fatal threat to their own health.

I hope the EU burns in hell. I hope their economic pact collapses. I hope the leaders of the countries who are responsible for this liberal junk wind up with their heads on pikes.

Not possible without leaving the EU.
The “european” court is the highest instance (above national laws) in the EU.
The government can battle it out in the “european” court
but if they lose they will have to comply.

This the same "gutless Irish government" that the EU bailed out? Is this not more evidence that when you are indebted to someone or something, such as the EU, that they, not you, can dictate much of anything they want you to do? =.=

'Not possible without leaving the EU."

Well, then pray the Irish leave the EU. I my (not so) humble opinion, the EU can't collapse fast enough. They are riding roughshod over every small-nation member and dictating ultra-beyond-liberal mandates. The pact needs to dissolve for the good of Europe...Not that there's much hope left anyway for those folks across the pond.

If you want to have an abortion, go to another EU country that allows it. Problem solved.

They do have the authority (because the Irish government agreed (along all other member states) that this court IS the highest authority).
I don´t like this fact too but this is a fact.

I for one am trying to understand why the USA is still in NATO.

The Cold War ended 20 years ago. Europeans are rich. Let Brussels create their own army. the USA does NOT need to be protecting the soft-dictatorship that is becoming the EU.

“potentially fatal”

Any pregnancy is potentially fatal, with a broad enough definition of “potentially”

That’s it — they took they bail-out and are beholden. I would hate to be in Europe and part of the EU. Didn’t some of the countries ‘join’ without the people’s vote?

So the EU wants to decrease the Irish population!
I guess they need room for all the Muslim moving in from Turkey.
