Fears are growing for award-winning Swedish actor Per Oscarsson and his wife after human remains were found in his house, which burnt down on Friday.

The remains of one person found in the ashes are likely to be either that of the 83-year-old star or his 67-year-old wife, Kia Ostling, police said.

Both have been missing since the fire in south-western Sweden on Friday.

Oscarsson won best actor at Cannes in 1966 and has appeared in films based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy.

The house, in a remote area outside the small town of Skara, was completely destroyed, with only the chimney left when firefighters arrived at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not known. ...

Very tragic news. It is an extraordinary co-incidence that the title of the latest movie in the trilogy is "The Girl Who Played with Fire", and stories about arson are part of the plot.

Sad news.

He appeared in the excellent Utvandrarna/Nybyggarna films about Swedish Immigrants to Minnesota (based on Wilhelm Moberg’s ‘The Emigrants’ book series). He played a supporting role to Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman.

Not many Americans are aware of these Swedish language movies as they offer subtitles only in the other Nordic languages - none in English. Actually, I think the lack of English enhances the movie for an English speaker. The movie can be followed without fluency in Swedish. It helps underscore the magnitude of the challenge these people took on as they abandoned the hardships of like in Småland, crossed the sea by sailboat, hacked new lives for themselves out of the wilderness in a strange new land. If you get a rare chance to see this outstanding 2 part film, don’t pass it up!

RIP Per Oscarsson.

“The New Land” was released here here in the US. Our school class took a field trip to see it. Year later I saw it on TV. Don't think it was dubbed as the actors I did recognize from other movies had their own voices.

I was surprised to find that English versions of the movie still can be found on VHS:

The Emigrants

The New Land

I was speaking of this version:

Utvandrarna & Nybyggarna

Good stuff!
