Dr. Andrew Wakefield's 1998 report in the journal Lancet purporting to show a link between autism and the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella "was based not on bad science but on a deliberate fraud," says Dr. Fiona Godlee, editor in chief of BMJ, formerly the British Medical Journal, in an editorial published Tuesday. The editorial accompanies the first of three reports by British investigative journalist Brian Deer that document how Wakefield manipulated data in his attempts to prove something that he "knew" before he started his research. Most of the information in the reports has been published previously, but the recent publication of the General Medical Council's 6-million-word transcript of the hearing in which Wakefield's license to practice medicine in Britain was revoked allowed the editors of BMJ to peer-review Deer's reports and confirm the extensive falsifications in the original Lancet paper.

"If you do a Google search of vaccines, so much of what you see are anti-vaccine sentiments using Wakefield's work as a basis for it, and as a result, children are having vaccines withheld. According to WHO - there are over 20 million cases of measles world wide each year. In poor undeveloped countries there are 164k deaths associated with it. In America, there are 2 in 1000 cases reported that result in death.
Good luck finding a percentage of deaths due to vaccination - SIDS covers most of them for babies, and although there’s a reporting system, most doctors won’t submit even obvious reactions, much less a death.
That 2 out 1000 cases reported...well there’s a higher probability of dying from the flu

“Some 40-50 years ago children were not vaccinated until they were ready for the first grade at age 6. Neurological disorders were very uncommon then. Today, children are vaccinated at birth for HiB and begin their long vaccination-journey at 2 months of age, before the blood brain barrier is fully developed. A review of the medical literature around the world will turn up many articles linking vaccinations with many neurological disorders. Before the 1940s, autism was extremely rare or unheard of. Then in the mid-1940s we began a massive vaccination programs and autism was “born”. The point they missed was that it was the Doctor’s cold needles that caused the problem, not the mother’s cold heart.
“The strongest link was between measles virus antibodies and anti-MBP, suggesting that exposure to the measles virus may cause the immune systems of children with autism to attack myelin,” Singh said. Children with autism produce anti-bodies against their own brain, making autism an auto-immune condition. “Singh compiled a nonscientific, anecdotal survey of 88 autistic children whose families have contacted him. Of those, 51 percent said symptoms of autism began shortly after the MMR vaccination, and 36 percent said the problems started days after the DPT shot.” Anecdotal evidence over-whelmingly points to vaccines as causing autism. The connect between autism and vaccinations can not be denied.
The pertussis vaccine is very neurotoxic and is used in the laboratory to produce brain lesions in lab animals for study. But if our child develops brain problems after a DPT vaccination, our doctor will tell us it is coincidence or genetic. Vaccinations have been known to increase the demyelination, a process related to many neurologic diseases and MS is a demyelination disease. Myelin is designed to protect the outer coating of neurons, much like the plastic outer coating over an electrical wire. When this myelin is damaged, neurological disorders, such as, MS, paralysis, or ALS, will result. (Singh mentioned autism as a result of demyelination disorder.) The nerves are short-circuited and do not function normally.”
The point wasn’t what you as an individual should do but the value and nature of vaccines per se.
So while there may a hundred reasons why you decide against taking vaccines there a a million reasons why others did.
Vaccines have saved countless lives and if you measured anything else in the same benefit/harm ratio we would ban automobiles immediately.
The BBC could play video next week of Wakefield snorting coke and doing an underage hooker, all the while shouting that he had falsified his results, and it wouldn't matter.
At some point they'd probably decide that Wakefield was a deep-cover government plant intended to discredit the movement.
It’s unfortunate that when some money-grubbing fool publishes a fudged article claiming that a vital, lifesaving tool can cause horrible, debilitating disease, gets international attention, and is finally discredited....all the “concerned parents” of the world still worship him because The Man wants to give their kids autism, without for a second considering possibility that maybe The Other Man just wanted to grab a quick buck.
You are correct a child is much more likely to die in an automobile accident than by a childhood disease in America.

There is simply no way to ignore the VASTLY greater benefits of vaccines than the few bad reactions and your comment above was not at all what I said. The comparison was vaccines and automobiles.

When the immune system encounters a pathogen, it will either fight it off and the organism will recover, or it will succumb and the organism will die. The health of the immune system is extremely important in the immune response. A healthy person who has given its body the fuel (nutrition) it needs will manifest a stronger immune response than someone who is immunocompromised. While I agree with your point, the stronger immune system will still have a more favorable immune respose. And as I said in a previous post, these pathogens will all be encountered at one time or another. Some will get the disease, others not. Genetics certainly plays a role, but so does the overall health of the organism.
When you encounter small pox, trusting to “genetics” to keep you from the disease, or even chicken pox as an adult - I will inform you pock marked face that what your immune system needed was information about the 3-D structure of the pox virus to ramp up the cells that produce that particular antibody that will bind to that 3-D form.
If you understood the mechanism you would realize that vaccination is enabling your immune system to gather information about fighting off pathogens WITHOUT contracting them - which has been of enormous benefit to mankind.
Exposure to all pathogens is essentially inevitable. Why shoot human manipulated pathogens into my arm, when I’m going to be exposed to the natural form anyway. My primary immune response will be stimulated, and will have a higher chance at success if I am healthy. The next time I am exposed, my secondary immune response will be ready to fight off the pathogen with only a subclinical reaction.
Why shoot “human manipulated pathogens” (manipulated to not be pathogenic I should add) into your arm?
Because exposure to the attenuated form gives the 3-D information about the pathogen to your immune system WITHOUT a pathogenic response.
But go ahead and not get vaccinated to small pox, and then expose yourself to it. I will get vaccinated to small pox and expose myself to it. We will see who survives and/or what our FACE looks like after. Maybe then you will embrace medicine circa 1796 and the brilliant theory of Dr. Jenner, and perhaps catch up on the advancements to modern antibody based medicines and an understanding of HOW it all works.
Dr. Jenner is, indeed, a great asset to the advancement of health. Using cowpox to defeat smallpox was sheer genius. The problem I have with modern immunization theory is that we are encouraged to be immunized against everything. The body is exposed to varicella quite naturally, but now, we need a vaccine, or we may experience lethal complications (according to the drug companies).
By the way, the manipulated pathogens remain pathogenic, just with the addition of other substances potentially toxic to humans.
Also, if I was travelling to a third world country, I would seriously consider, and probably get, a malaria vaccine. However, we don’t need to infect infant immune systems with over 30 shots befoe the age of 2. It makes no sense immunologically speaking.
By the way, I have not gotten the smallpox vaccine. I’m 41 and still free of any clinical response to the disease. I can guarantee you I’ve been exposed to the pathogen in my travels. Probably had a subclinical infection, and a secondary immune response that successfully fought the disease off. Wouldn’t have happened had I been living on McDonalds.
The attenuated virus does not remain pathogenic, that is the entire point of an “attenuated” virus.
There is no malaria vaccine.
I can guarantee you that you HAVE NOT been exposed to smallpox in your travels.
But if your eating your veggies you wont get smallpox from taking the malaria vaccine that has toxins and pathogens.
