...Rep. Michele Bachmann says her "tears are flowing" at the news. She says she had the privilege of knowing Giffords as a friend, and she calls her colleague someone who governed with integrity and wisdom.
All of the perverse political spin on the shooting will—assuming Rep. Giffords recovers with her mental faculties intact—be promptly put to rest by the victim/heroine herself. She does not appear to be the type of individual to suffer fools gladly. I suspect it would not be out of character for Rep.Giffords—through some well-directed and appropriate comments—to immediately put an end to the left wing/media ranting, the threats to the First Amendment, and the unwarranted attacks on the Tea Party and Sarah Palin. Despite being a Democrat, pro-choice and perhaps soft on immigration, her record does not provide support for the assumption that she would be a willing dupe for all of the grandstanding and blame-gaming going on within the left and the left-sympathetic media. She is, after all, that rare occurrence, a moderate Democrat from a conservative state.
Should she recover with her faculties intact, she will have become a formidable candidate for higher office, having passed through the public and private crucible of a failed assassination attempt, and a subsequent almost miraculous physical recovery. These are the kinds of “cinematic” life-changing events that catapult a politician in the minds of the electorate to superstar status. She would be the equivalent of a decorated war hero. Ms. Giffords will eclipse Sarah Palin and everyone else on the political scene today. She will become unbeatable.
