The man arrested for opening fire at a community meeting held by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Saturday -- killing six people and injuring 13 others -- disrupted classes at Pima Community College, tried to manipulate his dreams and posted rambling messages on the Internet.
The suspected shooter is Jared Lee Loughner, a 22-year-old who lives on the northwest side. He is mentally unstable and may have had an accomplice, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said Saturday evening.
A former classmate of Loughner at Pima, from which he was suspended Sept. 29 for code-of-conduct violations, said he was "obviously very disturbed."
"He disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts," said Lynda Sorenson, who took a math class with Loughner last summer at Pima Community College's Northwest campus.
Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers. The threats weren't against Giffords, Dupnik said.

As a middle school student, Loughner was "kind of an outcast," said Shannin Macey, who said via e-mail she attended Tortolita and Mountain View with him. In high school, Loughner was in jazz band and played the saxophone, but he dropped out in junior year, said Tommy Marriotti, who was a high-school friend of Loughner.
At the time he dropped out, Loughner was having drug problems, Marriotti said, but he seemed to do well once he started taking classes at Pima.
Loughner attended Pima courses from summer 2005 until he withdrew in October after his suspension, the college said.
He tried to enlist in the Army in 2008 but was rejected, said First Sgt. Brian Homme, who oversees Army recruiting in Tucson. Loughner was sent to Phoenix to take a test and physical, but "he was found to be unqualified," Homme said.

Sorenson, Loughner's classmate at Pima, said he was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class.
Pima officials said in a news release that from February to September 2010, Loughner had five contacts with PCC police for classroom and library disruptions at Northwest and West campuses.
If he dropped out of high school, how did he get into college?
I live in SW MO., I have legal firearms.
One question: As many hoops as I had to jump through to legally own a firearm, (and I am not a felon, nor do I have a history of drug use, nor am I an individual with a history of death threats against others, nor does anyone think I am crazy for my weird outbursts, nor are the gun laws particularly strict, and it still took some doing) how was he even ABLE to obtain a gun?

I found a report last in pdf form that showed she worked at one time for the Parks Dept.
The boy was clearly mentally disturbed. It will be interesting to see if she pulled strings for him.

People naturally gravitate to a child when there are killings because such a long life full of all kinds of potential was snuffed out by a lunatic ...because of a chance decision to go to a political meeting.
All the deaths and wounded victims are a tragedy but to see a young child taken away - sometimes it is just hard to comprehend God’s plan.

FWIW, I suspect the other guy they’re looking for played a large role in this, perhaps making use of the obviously disturbed younger man to carry out his desires. I’ll bet the older guy on the loose is the rabid anti-semite. Just my thoughts.
It is absolutely disgusting to see “political rhetoric” (undoubtedly only from the right) being blamed for this shooting. The left will stoop to ANYTHING. Never was there fiercer nastiness than what was poured out toward President Bush. Nothing going on now compares to that.

I don’t know how it is in Arizona, but here in Ohio if you are a registered voter also listed is your party affiliation. It is a matter of public record, a simple perusal of his voter registration would reveal his political leaning. I’m guessing demoNcrat.

Exactly! What did he know, and when did he know it? This is a very sad case that could have been avoided, and is a lesson to all of us. Schizophrenia is a terrible disorder, and can be dangerous to the person who has it and all those around them. It should not be ignored. Drug treatment for schizophrenia can be very effective. Also, what were the faculty at Pima thinking? I'm not blaming anyone for this shooting, but instead of trying to hang this tragedy on the Tea Party and Sarah Palin, the sheriff and others involved should be thinking about what they missed and how to prevent missing the same things in the future.

I have seen samples of the Unabomber's writings, and just today read samples of Loughner's posts on various websites.
Compared to Loughner, the Unabomber is a genius.
Loughner registered to vote for the first time in 2006, said Chris Roads, Pima County's registrar of voters. He registered as an independent and last voted in the 2008 general election.

THE suspect being held over Saturday’s shooting of US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords may have links to anti-Semitic race hate group American Renaissance.
An internal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memo quoted by FOX News Channel revealed the gunman - named by the media as Jared Loughner, 22 - is “possibly linked” to American Renaissance.
The group subscribes to an ideology that is “anti-government, anti-immigration, anti -ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government), anti-Semitic,” according to the DHS memo.
Giffords “is the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government. She was also opposite this group’s ideology when it came to immigration debate,” the note said.
The suspect’s mother works the Pima County Board of Supervisors in Arizona, the briefing added.
The DHS confirmed that the FBI have now taken over the investigation.
Sounds like Loughner is a prime example of the result of the therapeutic state. he got involved in weird psychological therapies and, as is usual, became even crazier than he normally was. I’d like to see what drug was prescribed for him recently.
Wonder if JL was a fan of Comedy Central? I’d like to be able to blame Jon Stewart.
