Illinois Passes A Huge 66% Tax Hike, Governors Around The Country Are Making Fun Of It

Poor Illinois. It's taken over the mantle as the state that everyone thinks is the most screwed.

Faced with a monster budget gap, the state Senate just passed a monster 66% hike in the state income tax.

The news has governors or other states gleeful.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels said today that the tax hike was good for... Indiana

And during his State of the State address, New Jersey governor Chris Christie held up Illinois as a state that was going in the wrong direction.

Chicago readers, any plans to move?

Would love to leave the state when we retire, but our kids and grandkids are here.....

I hear you. We are in the tax Hell to the North (Milwaukee area) but perhaps things will pick up slightly here with the new Republican Administration

However....we have advised our children to find somewhere else to settle and when we can WE will follow them.

Joe jumped the gun a bit. It passed the house committee 7 to 5. It hasn’t been voted on yet in the full house or senate, but it does look look likely it will pass.

OK, for the ultimate in contrarian postings:

Good for Illinois. They’ve grabbed the bull by the horns, and have finally done something, instead of selling off assets they still need, saving a nickel now to lose a quarter later.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. Their remedy is completely wrong. It will sink their economy, and they’ll eventually have to make even more painful spending cuts. But the wrong solution to a problem reveals the right solution to the problem; ignoring the problem is far worse.

Yes, Boeing moved its HQ to IL because it's CEO at the time, Harry Stonecipher, had his oldest daughter living in the Chicago area and didn't want to fly four hours each way to visit. Harry retired from Boeing, but was brought back 18 months hater as interim CEO. On his second tenure as CEO,

Harry got caught playing around with a 45 year old female VP (he was 66-67). The Boeing Board asked him to resign and the VP got fired. Mrs. Stonecipher was the last to know and first to file for divorce. She got 50 percent of everything Harry had (including his Boeing perks). The fired female VP was divorced by her husband. The Boeing HQ remains behind in IL as a tribute to Harry Stonecipher.

Thanks for the reference, the last I had heard it was going to 5.25%. Every little bit helps. Illinois still doesn't tax retirement income. I wonder when that's coming? A minority of our household income comes from retirement though.

Why does every page have this stupid message? “Note: Years of cuts mean the budget is threadbare.”

I call BS. More like years of non-cuts have left the state trying to support too many functions they don’t have money for. What they need are real cuts- elimination of services and departments that are not fundamental to the government’s mission. Too many departments are trying to provide social services, regulate the minutia of business and persons’ private affairs and protect people from the natural consequences of their decisions while paying inflated union wages and fantastic retirement plans to the bureaucratic class.

When they layoff half the bureaucrats and eliminate their departments, cut the spigots to the teachers unions and shift all the education money to vouchers and cutback the legislatures salaries and budgets then I will accept that the budget is threadbare from cuts... only by then the budget would run a surplus.

Ya’ll just all pack up and come to Tennessee. We have no income tax, and not likely to get one any time soon, plus a low cost of living (at least in most parts). Only don’t go to West Tennessee. It’s a Democrat stronghold from way back, especially Memphis which is the old “Ford dynasty” location, plus is on the New Madrid earthquake fault. - We have 5” of snow on the ground right now, but that’s not all that usual; most winters are pretty mild though cold enough that you know its winter, hot summers usually, the Smoky Mountains in east TN to visit on vacation and not too long a drive. - Except for the rattlesnakes in warm weather, the coyotes, bobcats, wild turkeys, raccoons, foxes, deer, occasional tornados passing over mostly, you have it all to yourself for the most part. We love it, but we were born and raised here. Democrats have lost some of their stranglehold on this state in the past few years. People are wising up.

I just heard that Illinois’s state income tax (with the 66%) increase is still lower than Wisconsin’s. But, Illinois’s sales tax might still be higher than Wisconsin’s.

Here I am. DON'T COME TO TEXAS. THEY ARE LIARS.

it is too hot and dry/humid in the summer. Too cold in the winter with only sleet. The people are not polite. Criminals run free and our women are fat. Business sucks and nobody is working. What really sucks is that our kids recite the pledge of allegiance and even pray before football games. Oh and GUNS. Oh my God , they're in everybody's home and even the women hunt deer.

So if you're from a liberal area , please move to new York , Boston , Los Angeles or Seattle. If you are in one of this cities just switch to another one. Cause the only way to fix problems is to raise taxes, give union jobs to everybody, let illegal aliens take jobs, get public benefits and attend your schools without paying taxes, sue anybody that mentions God, is a doctor and finally become a cynical unpatriotic quisling that hates our country.

That would be correct. Our property taxes are massive as well.

We have two sets of aging parents who are firmly entrenched here, but as I mentioned, we've asked our kids to break the cycle.

MGD often shakes his fist at his ancestors for settling here - (we hate the cold!)..."Ach! Wenzel....it's just like the olt country!" he imagines them saying, to which MGD replies, "the old country SUCKED or you wouldn't have left!" LOL

Didn't hear about THAT, but these didn't look like they were going to be up for long. I can tell you when I return in (...estimating...) a year.
