WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Tenn. - A Williamson County woman fought off an intruder with a vacuum cleaner. She was desperate for help, waiting for almost 35 minutes for law enforcement to arrive.

The single mom described that 35 minutes like the scene of a horror movie as she watched a man walk from windows to doors doing anything to break in to her home.

It was a startling discovery that Robin Ribeiro made at 2 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday.

"I see a man at my door and Amber is up there and I go there is a man!" said Ribeiro.

But Ribeiro was even more shocked by what happened over the next 35 minutes. That's how long it took for her to get law enforcement to her house.

"I am saying the police 'where are they? Where are they?' And they say they are on their way, they're on their way," recalled Ribeiro.

“Budget cuts meant Williamson County only had 6 officers patrolling 583 square miles on Tuesday night.”

Yeah, with numbers like that, it is *definitely* time to invest in a decent scatter gun.

Budget cuts? Sounds like some Rat wanted to get a bridge named after him and took the money from the police.

Did this woman have a permit for that vacuum cleaner? Was the intruder hurt in any way that would make her liable under the law? Does she have homeowner's insurance?

Does anyone know the man's contact info? We would like to take the case, as I am sure Robin Ribeiro wantonly inflicted emotional distress on the poor fellow, causing him a self-esteem deficit and PTS. We pay finder's fees.

$250,000 in damages cover it?

Why don’t they ever just go out the back door while the intruder is kicking down the front?

"I'd suggest she get a pump action shotgun.

The first line of defense is yourself.

Wait...the story says it took 14 minutes, but the headline says 35?

Either way...another reason to be armed for sure.

The undocumented late-night visitor may have endured an atypical childhood.
We should seek to understand if this caused his peculiar social behavior before engaging in vitriolic commentary.

Well said! We also have to look consider the possibility that Sarah Palin’s violent retoric influenced his actions.

"Why don’t they ever just go out the back door while the intruder is kicking down the front?"

A good idea but not always possible. What if the intruder is not alone and someone is at the back door as well? Having a weapon and knowing how to use it is the best defense.

That poor woman; at least she fought back with a vacuum cleaner.

Perhaps she’ll look into Tennessee’s weapons laws and decide to protect herself and her daughter with the help of Mr. Colt, Mr. Glock, or a number of other fine gentlemen on call day or night.

I can think of three reasons that the mother in this story may have rejected (if she ever thought of) the notion to flee out another escape.

First, there could be multiple intruders. It is not uncommon for criminals to work in pairs or larger groups.

Secondly, depending on the size and/or layout of the house, the intruder may hear the attempted escape and intercept and attack them while they attempt to flee.

Thirdly, frightened children can be unpredictable. Removing Frightened children from a known scenario (Child’s bedroom = safety to most children) to unknown scenario (Outside where the Bad Man could be) introduces new risks.

If an opportunity to escape out another exit arises, that is an opportunity that some people could probably do so with minimal danger to themselves and to their families. But for some other families, it may not be practical or feasible.

Just my thoughts.

Meanwhile, 65 retired police officers were soundly sleeping in their new Sleep Number beds.

Sleep Number beds are remarkably comfortable, so one could truly understand if they were quietly slumbering.

She should have invested in some hardware for such occasions.

Not a guarantee that it would have prevented what happened, but it sure as hell would have bettered her chances.

EVERYONE should own a firearm. Especially parents!

"We don't call 911..."

Call 911 and do what you have to in the process. Better if you let law enforcement know what is going on. If you are in a position that you can't call 911 do what you have to then call.
