Has Sarah Palin's Moment Come and Gone (exhausted by over-exposure?)
The Washington Examiner ^ | Wednesday, January 19, 2011 | Mark Tapscott

There are certain folks in our lives to whom we pay particular attention when they speak because we know they have wisdom of a certain sort. John Hinderaker of Powerline is one of those folks for me.

He's reached an important conclusion about former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's presidential prospects - She doesn't have any. Says Hinderaker in a post pegged to the 59 percent unfavorability rating for Palin among independents that turned up in the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll:

"No one with a 59 percent unfavorability rating among independents has the chance of a snowball in Hell of being elected President," Hinderaker said. "2012 will be a vitally important election year; it is no time for a kamikaze Presidential campaign or for a cult of personality."

"Republicans (and conservatives) need a candidate who has a chance to win against an incumbent who, despite everything, is not particularly unpopular and who won't be able to do much visible damage between now and then."

Hinderaker calls himself a Palin fan, and his Powerline blog, which features him and colleagues Paul Mirengoff and Scott Johnson, has always been among the most thoughtful and incisive blogs on the Right. So Hinderaker's conclusion regarding Palin's suitability for a 2012 White House run carries a lot of weight among folks who would be crucially important to the former Alaska governor's prospects.

My thought is that Palin's rising disapproval has less to do with her response to the Tucson Massacre and more to do with public exhaustion. Between her books, her 2010 campaign prominence, the constant nagging of those on the Left who go absolutely berserk at the mere mention of her name, frequent appearances on Fox News, the dramas of her daughter's relationship with Levi and her success on "Dancing with the Stars," and the Discovery Channel reality TV series, Palin has been here, there, and everywhere for several months.

There is an old maxim that it doesn't matter what they say as long as they spell your name properly. But here's another maxim that has particular relevance for politicos in the Media Age - Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing when there is no escaping the good thing.

The weak-kneed among us are hitting the fainting couches, and there is still a whole a year from the first primaries.

Sarah Palin has more fight in her than these oh-so-thoughtful conservative men.

FR discussion thread on the Powerline piece.

And yet they just can’t help talking about her!

So now we have this article, echoing the Powerline article, echoing a CNN poll. D.C. groupthink.

The most certain way to get someone to read your column is to stick Palin’s name in the headline.

Nope.

Not even close.

This political rocket is still resolutely ascending toward its apogee.

Weight among whom?

If he has a crystal ball, I would suggest he start playing Powerball.

If he is getting weak listening to the press, then I suggest he find a new line of work.

If she doesn’t have a chance, then why are you people going full throttle, all day and all night, trying to beat her?

Overexposure is a very real phenomenon. In Palin’s case, it might not be of concern since she might not run for president. She does not appear to be taking any of the steps necessary to run a credible presidential campaign. By credible, I mean she’s not doing any of the necessary groundwork to put an organization together, raise funds, meet at least a few key world leaders, etc.

The lame stream media would not have gone to such lengths to discredit her if they did not fear her. It is far too early to throw in the towel for her. There are a lot of issues and time to address them yet. As for the criticism of her last speech being too “thin skinned” or not necessary since the overall criticism of conservatives and their falsely portrayed “role” in the Arizona matter let me say that I’d rather have Sarah firing both barrels in response than another Bush who never fought back about anything. Many people believe that a charge unanswered must be true. Can she win the nomination or the election in ‘12? Time will tell.

LOL! Aren't you the "expert"?

Basically all Sarah Palin needs to do to mount a credible campaign is to throw her hat into the ring. She will immediately be the front runner that everyone else will have to chase. She is the only current living Republican human being who can fill a stadium with cheering supporters at the drop of a hat.

You think Romney or Pawlenty have that kind of clout or that they have all their ducks in a row to mount a campaign? I don't think so. They are all just staying home and praying to God that Sarah takes a pass on this election. Their only hope is that Sarah doesn't run and then turns around and supports them.

Palin will not be President largely in part to overexposure. The moderate to severe speech cadence problem she has was not corrected over time for whatever reason..it seems she never worked on it and no one helped her with it.

The deficit is purely superficial as evidenced by her written work..but it will prove to be fatal to her chances to connect to others who do not read and will continue to falsely confirm the mime that she is not intelligent.

Palin has played a vital part in the long march and will continued to do so indefinitely. She should sanctify a candidate.

the constant nagging of those on the Left who go absolutely berserk at the mere mention of her name

As if, should Sarah Palin go away, they wouldn't immediately turn all their fire on whoever the next conservative is who has the temerity to run for President against their messiah.

Trying to find that ideal candidate who won't excite the hatred and ridicule of the mass media that serves the Left's agenda is a fool's game. I give you John McCain as Exhibit A. He's not even a real conservative, and he was every liberal's favorite RINO before he became the Republican nominee. The minute he started running against Obama, he became the devil incarnate.

It will happen to anybody. Dumping Sarah won't save you, weak-knee'd "Republicans". It will only encourage more of the same character assassination against the next target.

Not sure what you mean by speech cadence problem — maybe you could elaborate.

She does have a breathiness, an impatient quality to her speech that is a little disconcerting — plus the northern accent may turn people off. But I still don’t understand why people call her stupid. The Catie Cupcakes interview aside, she did quite well in her debate with Clueless Joe Biden, put Death Panels and Mama Grizzlies into our national lexicon, and most important, carried the Tea Party to victory. No dummie, she.
