There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs-partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.

Belk said that her 6-foot-5-inch son, then 16, "stormed into the house complaining to no one in particular: 'Why does everyone assume that just because I'm black, I play basketball? That's just plain racist.

Why wouldn't you play basketball? You mean to say black men can't jump?

Their efforts to jam this mulatto down our throats as a super black have done more to damage my non racial belief system then anything approaching the TV “Gangland” series.

If you want to get rid of stereotypes, you must first get rid of the behaviour that allows those stereotypes to stick around....

Fact is, huge teenage boys of any color make people nervous. EXCEPT when in uniform.

Almost all stereotypes have some basis in reality. Just because they’re not true in ALL instances doesn’t mean they’re not true in SOME. And if one such instance can mean life or death, it’s probably safer to err on the side of caution. If you’re wrong, there’s no harm done except a needless elevation of your blood pressure. But if you give the benefit of doubt to someone who doesn’t deserve it, you can end up dead.

LOL, oh how I wish my inter-racial encounters involved such trivialities!

More elbow room on the subway, blithe assumptions of athletic prowess, a matter-of-fact encounter with LE for a driving infraction?

This young man needs a holiday in his honor just for managing to carry on.
