Rep. Steve Cohen apologizes for Nazi comments

By: Jennifer Epstein January 20, 2011 02:00 PM EST

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) is insisting that he didn’t mean to call his Republican colleagues Nazis for their opposition to the health care reform law, but nonetheless is apologizing to anyone offended by what he said on the House floor earlier this week.

In a statement released midday Thursday, Cohen said he wants “to be clear that I never called Republicans Nazis.” Rather, he said, he referred to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels in a Tuesday night floor speech because he considers Republicans to be peddling “propaganda” in their opposition to health care reform.

“The reference I made was to the greatest propaganda master of all time,” he said. “Propaganda, which is called ‘messaging’ today, can be true or false. In this case, the message is false.”

In his floor speech, Cohen said:“They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels. You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing.”

He continued to say that “Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it — believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care” and people have come to believe that too.

Cohen, who is Tennessee’s first Jewish congressman, also used the statement to apologize to fellow Jews.

“I would certainly never do anything to diminish the horror of the Nazi Holocaust as I revere and respect the history of my people,” he said.

“Wonder why liberals would LIE about the Nazis... “

For some reason, I’m reminded of Michael Moore being outraged that someone was putting on a Leni Riefenstahl film festival. I figured what really bugged him was the thought that people might notice the similarities between his and Riefenstahl’s works.

Well Stevie baby, whether you meant it or not, you did directly associate the republicans with Goebbels, a nazi... Your apology is not acceptable since you are still in denial with your words. I would suggest that you resign since you are not worthy enough to hold the office of Congressional Representative.......

Next time some non-political crazy person shoots somebody— it’s Steve Cohen’s fault.

Sure sounded like he did to me. I guess he just needs a lesson in “Spinning” events into something other that what is obvious to most people.

Doubt this would be considered a good or even marginal case of back spinning. This Spin was just pathetic and he should be made to pay for this in his future reelection bid.

Who did he apologize to? The Nazis, for comparing them to Republicans?

A man can be so filled with hatred, and yet we have a strong majority of press . . . just consumed with hatred of Sarah Palin.

I must admit that I have given no time considering what outrages the limousine liberal Moore.

Well, this was a good while ago — probably in the early-mid 90s, when I was still paying a bit of attention to libs and moderates.

The TN 9th district is 60% black. It might be best if a solid, black tea partier was recruited to run in 2012.

ABC News Jonathan Karl reports: The newfound civility didn’t last long. Political rhetoric in Congress doesn’t get much nastier than the words of one House Democrat during the debate on repealing the health care law.

In an extraordinary outburst on the House floor, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) invoked the Holocaust to attack Republicans on health care and compared rhetoric on the issue to the work of infamous Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

“They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels,” Cohen said. “You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing. And Congressman Cohen didn’t stop there.

“The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it—believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover,” Cohen said.
Cohen made his comments late last night, but they have attracted no attention because his speech was made to a virtually empty House chamber with no reporters around to watch.

Lawmaker: ‘Thank God’ Bush is gone

July 22, 2010,

There are many Democrats and at least a few Republicans on Capitol Hill who say they’re glad former President George W. Bush is no longer in office, but Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) this week went one step further: He thanked the Almighty for it.

Cohen took to the House floor on Tuesday, where he delivered remarks titled “Thank God Bush is Gone.”

Cohen blamed the 43rd president for the financial crisis, calling him “Hoover George Bush,” after former president Herbert Hoover.

“Now all [people] can say is Bush is gone,” Cohen said, “Nobody can defend him.”

The lawmaker took a few more swipes at the former president over tax cuts and the Iraq war before concluding, “Now all they can say is that he’s gone. Thank God he’s gone.

Career Politician, never held a real job.

Stephen Ira “Stevo” Cohen (born May 24, 1949) is the U.S. Representative for Tennessee’s 9th congressional district, serving since 2007. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He previously served as a Tennessee State Senator for 24 years.

Tennessee’s 9th district includes almost three-fourths of Memphis. Cohen is Tennessee’s first Jewish congressman. Cohen is the only non-black representing a black majority district in Congress.[1]

While serving for three years as Legal Advisor for the Memphis Police Department, Cohen rose to political prominence when he was elected to the Tennessee Constitutional Convention of 1977 at the age of 27. The Convention elected him its vice president.[6] Cohen was then elected to serve as a commissioner on the Shelby County Commission, an office he held from 1978 to 1980.[2] During his time at the Commission, Cohen was instrumental in the creation of The Med, a community-funded regional hospital.[6] In 1980, Cohen served as an interim Shelby County General Sessions Court judge.[2] He has also served as a delegate to the 1980, 1992, and 2004 Democratic National Conventions.[2]

Poor confused Jewish man. This guy is the poster child for what’s wrong with American Judaism.

Your party is actively working against Israel and supporting Palestinians, and yet the people fighting tooth and nail to get arms money and shipments restored to Israel are the ones aping Nazis.

Man’s last name is Cohen, which makes him part of a family of High Priests (the Cohenim).

They’re a stiff-necked people. That’s what the Bible says, anyway.

We ran Charlotte Bergmann, as solid Reagan Conservative as you could want. Black business woman, the Memphis Tea Party recruited her for that reason.

0bozo’s butt kisser took 75% of the vote.

Recruiting a solid Reagan Conservative, Black business woman is great but if she doesn’t have any money in her campaign coffers she’ll lose every time.

FYI, Cohen outspent her 4:1

Steve Cohen just wants to round up American citizens, and force them into government health exchanges against their will. When you tell the truth, you don’t have to apologize.
