Cable host Keith Olbermann and news channel MSNBC abruptly parted ways Friday night, as the network announced that his contract had ended and the last installment of his show would air that evening.
The surprise announcement strips MSNBC of its most-watched evening anchor after an increasingly tempestuous relationship, coming less than three months after the network briefly suspended the fiery host.
"MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors," the network said in an emailed statement just before the end of Mr. Olbermann's program.
MSNBC and Mr. Olbermann have been discussing ending his contract for some time, according to a person familiar with the matter. Neither side offered an explanation for their split. On the air, Mr. Olbermann said Friday would be his last show, and thanked viewers and staff.
The quick change set off a game of musical chairs, as MSNBC moved to fill the hole Mr. Olbermann will leave behind. The network said its 10 p.m. host Lawrence O'Donnell would move into Mr. Olbermann's 8 p.m. slot beginning on Monday.

Who is Keith Olbermann and what is MSNBC???
COUNTDOWN TO NO RATINGS (per Mark Levin)
Sarah Palin must have put a target on Ulbermann!
Descriptive, VERY descriptive!
Well, we still have Ed Schultz to provide that sort of comic relief.
To my great surprise, I just learned he started out making his radio talk show money mouthing North Dakota converative values. He even considered running for election to the House of Representatives -- as a Republican.
At 7 million a year salary, I’m sure it was an easy decision, as for Olbermaniac, I don’t think that squirrel will be making that salary ever again, anywhere.
Scratch one Palin hater.
I’ll bet this had something to do with the GE/Government arrangement. They have to have some faux air of impartiality, and it’s hard to do so if one of their properties is undeniably and outwardly attacking all things right. They can skew, deceive and misrepresent, but they can’t do it so nakedly. So Keith took a dive for them. He’ll be back after 2012! And he’ll be on the board of GE in a matter of months anyway :).

Well, since I have never watched this guy, I really could car less. If it wasn’t for FR, I’d have no clue who he, chrissy mathews or rachel Madcow are.

"Mark Levin Takes on the Haters"
Is this the beginning of the hope and change that they promised? A new course maybe.
Doesn't use of the plural overstate his audience?
New Obama spokesman?
What???!!!! No more Keith to kick around? That’s sad in a way. Olbermann was the poster boy for leftist dementia.
Roberts; "Let's have that conversation in 12 months, when we're playing with live ammo," he said darkly.
Oh Yeah...
Will KO be the new White House Press Secretary????
HA! HA!
I suggest they play each episode of Sarah Palin’s Alaska in that spot and watch their rating quadruple.
The dems demanded civility and harmoneous dialogue. Sometimes the alligator eats you first.
The guy lives with his mother.
Jus sayin.
OMG that would be great!
Olberfart’s head would explode, too- if he heard Coulter and/or Malkin were filling his time slot
