Obama is making the same mistake Carter made with the Shah. Sure the Shah wasn't perfect, but he sure as hell beat the alternative.

Secondary(?) concern: what happens when Egypt goes into the crapper and the Suez Canal becomes unavailable?

Carter may have made a mistake.

In Obama's case, I don't think it's a mistake at all.
