Affirmative Action Scandal Rocks NavalAcademy: Students Disillusioned atLower Admissions ...
Big Peace ^ | 1/27/11 | Peter Schweizer

Professor Bruce Fleming is not your typical US Naval Academy (USNA) Professor. He teaches English and he also happens to be a liberal. I’ve written favorably in my books about his work because he also happens to believe in speaking the truth. And by speaking the truth about the dirty secrets of affirmative action at the Naval Academy, he has set off a fire storm.

Fleming wrote a piece last year exposing the fact that the USNA had a “two-tiered” system of admission that was designed to bring more minorities into the academy. (Since access to the full article has expired, reporting on the article is available here.) And he began speaking to academy alumni about the lower standards. ”We’ll do anything to get non-white students,” he said, in order to appear more diverse and improve the football team. According to Fleming, the admissions system is two-tiered because minority candidates have lower test scores and grades than their counterparts. In short, Fleming says that the Academy is rejecting better qualified white applicants to admit minority candidates with less impressive credentials. The USNA has been very aggressive on the affirmative action front in recent years. In 2009, Adm. Gary Roughead, the chief of naval operations, went so far as to say that “diversity is the No. 1 priority” at the academy. (Gee, I guess training warriors and officers is now #2).

But Fleming, who has served on the academy’s admissions board, goes even further. While white applicants are required to secure a nomination by a member of congress or other federal official, minority candidates are sometimes given what he calls “a pro forma nomination to make it legit.”

But it gets even worse. As the Associated Press reports:

“Fleming told The Associated Press that midshipmen who struggle are given easier coursework

The honest truth is painful.

“The environment is particularly toxic for talented black midshipmen, he said, because they are perceived by some classmates as less-qualified.”

One of my ex students applied for the Naval Academy. It was a dream he had since he was in the 7th grade.

He didn't make the cut, but is now in his first year as a member of VMI's ratline.

Here in Ohio, a federal lawsuit is being filed against Governor Kasich because he didn’t hire any “minorities” in his cabinet.

This means blacks of course, since he has hired women. I thought they were considered minorities.

Sometimes these “minority” groups cause a lot of trouble whether they are hired or not hired.

Indeed.

Halsey (who was ill) was the guy who recommmeded (to Admiral Nimitz), Spruance to replace him in commanding the fleet at Midway.

Which of course, resulted in perhaps the finest hour in the illustrious history of the USN.

Much as I hate to say it, when I was still active duty, it was an article of faith that a competent female JAG was automatically a star, getting the best opportunities in schools, TDYs and assignments. And if she played golf - well, the sky was the limit.

This is true for all ranks and all AFSCs. In some AFSCs, the competency requirement can be disregarded.

God bless all sailors who have to serve under unfit commanders and may they never have to go in harms way.

Article doesn’t really specify the favored minorities. Are women in that category?
Anybody know firsthand (or near)?

“Liberal” and “truth” do NOT go hand in hand.

Ah... but you don't understand liberals! It's all in the definition! Remember, words have no specific meanings and only mean what the speaker intends them to mean.

One of THE core "liberal" values is that the truth is relative and defined by the individual. If he this statement was "true for him", then it's "truth".

When you try to apply our objective definitions of concepts to leftist words, you're just gonna get confused.

Political correctness has already killed - many.
Ft Hood and Tucson are two recent high profile “PC-related” deaths.

I’m still waiting for the empirical study showing that “diversity” has any benefit whatsoever.

The only study that tried to prove this proved the opposite.

Well...MAYBE...when it comes to players, though you will regularly hear grumbling from the usual suspects...ah hell with the nuance...BLACKS, when the racial compostion of a MLB team isn’t to their liking. I think this DOES have an effect on player promotion. and yes, no race extortion is necessary in the NFL or NBA where they are already the clear majority.

This is not to mention coaching quotas such as the openly racist NFL “Minority” Hire Interviewing policy.
