Egypt is one of only two muslim countries that actually has a peace agreement with Israel. Mubarak has several times worked as a go between for Israel and the other arab states. The IDF is very, very nervous today.

Why does the USA support Egypt at all? “
What we’ve bought with our aid to Egypt has been an effective arms blockade of Hamas in Gaza.... And Mubarak’s one saving grace is that he’s an ‘honest politician - he stays bought’.....
As someone pointed out upthread, there’s ‘Bad’ (support of a Dictator) and ‘Worse’ (opening the pipeline for a flood of Iranian arms - and forces? - to Israel’s REAL enemies...)

We are looking at a new Govt which will close down the Suez, destabilize the area and this is really bad for the entire region.
So, you prefer their peace treaty with Israel broken?

The people looking to take over Egypt consider the ‘73 war as unfinished business, and they are gonna need jobs and a unifying cause for tens of millions of Egyptians to keep themselves in power
