A Chicken Chain’s Corporate Ethos Is Questioned by Gay Rights Advocates (Chick-fil-A)
New York Times ^ | January 29, 2011 | KIM SEVERSON

The Chick-fil-A sandwich — a hand-breaded chicken breast and a couple of pickles squished into a steamy, white buttered bun — is a staple of some Southern diets and a must-have for people who collect regional food experiences the way some people collect baseball cards.

New Yorkers have sprinted through the airport here to grab one between flights. College students returning home stop for one even before they say hello to their parents.

But never on Sunday, when the chain is closed.

Nicknamed “Jesus chicken” by jaded secular fans and embraced by Evangelical Christians, Chick-fil-A is among only a handful of large American companies with conservative religion built into its corporate ethos. But recently its ethos has run smack into the gay rights movement. A Pennsylvania outlet’s sponsorship of a February marriage seminar by one of that state’s most outspoken groups against homosexuality lit up gay blogs around the country. Students at some universities have also begun trying to get the chain removed from campuses.

“If you’re eating Chick-fil-A, you’re eating anti-gay,” one headline read. The issue spread into Christian media circles, too.

The outcry moved the company’s president, Dan T. Cathy, to post a video on the company’s Facebook fan page to “communicate from the heart that we serve and value all people and treat everyone with honor, dignity and respect,” said a company spokesman, Don Perry.

Providing sandwiches and brownies for a local seminar is not an endorsement or a political stance, Mr. Cathy says in the video. But he adds that marriage has long been a focus of the chain, which S. Truett Cathy, his deeply religious father, began in 1967.

The donation has some fans cheering and others forcing themselves to balance their food desires against their personal beliefs.

Cool. I could live with that. I wish they would open up one around here so I could "eat anti-gay".

Yet another good reason to choose Chick-fil-A.

This will be a great test of the strength of the intolerant mob that wants to bring down what remains of Christian culture in America. Chick-fil-A has always stood up for decency and family values at their very best, with the founding family giving freely of their time as well as their money to help people in need. I have never heard of another corporation like this. But I am afraid the perpetually discontented “gay” guys may prevail here.

"If you’re eating Chick-fil-A, you’re eating anti-gay,”

If that's true, I'll start buying the family a Chicken sandwich from there every week. That's only about 312 additional sandwiches a year for them, but it's at least as many as the majority of the loudmouths will ever buy there. In fact, I doubt the sort of chicken sold in the restaurants is the sort gay folks are looking for anyway.

The people in this country can’t have anything nice anymore, without fagscism stomping in and ruining it.

Not just another sandwich. Try it as a club sandwich----w/ bacon, cheese, and lettuce and tomato.

Chick-Fil-A / Esquire Magazine's pick for best sandwich

You can get a chicken sandwich anywhere, which may explain your low expectations. But down south, there lives an eye-opener. A come-to-Jesus sandwich. The Chick-fil-A.

Seasoned, breaded breast served on a toasted buttered bun with dill-pickles. No mayo. No sauce at all. Deceptively simple, yet transcendent.

The hook is the breading: spicy, with an intoxicating crunch. The meat is always juicy, never chewy. The bun is like lingerie -- there, but not, providing delicious support without obscuring the main flavor.

The first bite changes everything you think you know about chicken. And about the need for condiments. -- by Allison Glock

We have a few around here...the food is good, but the service is by far the best I’ve ever experienced at a fast food restaurant. That said, I’m sure the FDA will find a reason to scrutinize Chick-Fil-A soon enough...

If they are anti-gay they are deserving of support. This can only help business. Ever notice gays like to use fancy words like “ethos”?

Gays aren’t an oppressed minority, they are terrorists bent on destroying all that is good in America.

The homosexuals and most liberals continue to demonstrate they suffer from Christianphobia due to their embracing the darkness of satan and rejecting Him.
