White House Spokesman Robin Gibbs would not pledge to guarantee Israel's security if its existence is in danger, in a Wednesday press briefing. In reference to recent Middle East turmoil, he was asked: "If Israel is threatened by any of these new governments or Hamas and Hizbullah, if its existence is in danger, would the US come to its assistance?
Gibbs answered: "Regardless of the situation facing any government in the region, our friendship, our partnership and our alliance with Israel is unchanged."
Gibbs also said the Administration could not force a peace settlement on Israel and the PA. "The president has been involved from day one in seeking a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians," he said, but added that "We cannot force those two into steps that they are unwilling to take steps to do themselves."

I don’t see the fudge either. He basically said “whatever you expected Reagan, two Bushes or Clinton to do, we would do the same.” In diplomatic-speak.
This statement won’t embolden Israel’s foes. It’s what they know our president to be that will embolden them.

kinda like (I forget who it was) saying that South Korea is outside the US sphere of protection. the Korean war followed soon after.

didn't we also tell Iraq, when they wanted to know if we would defend Kuwait that we were only interested in peace, which led to the first gulf war? and let's not forget "peace within our time"

I don't see it that way at all. I really don't want to defend Gibbs, but he said "our friendship, our partnership and our alliance with Israel is unchanged."
How is that like saying "South Korea is not our concern" (which is how the statement from the 1950's was interpreted).
As another poster said, the US just announced that Obama will treat Israel the way Reagan, Clinton, and two Bushes did.
I see no fudge.

I don’t see this president lifting a finger against his Muslim buddies if they attack Israel.
Israel better understand (and read the prophets again)
that they stand alone
and must turn to God to save them.

Well, let me be clear: I think Obama's actions will not be good at all. I think the Middle East is a real powder keg, and I worry about Israel very much.
But, as far as the use of language goes, I think what Gibbs said was what any decent administration would say. But I don't think they meant it.
