The CR was immediately rejected by the lead appropriator in the Senate.
It is clear from this proposal that House Republicans are committed to pursuing an ineffective approach to deficit reduction that attempts to balance the budget on the back of domestic discretionary investments, which constitute only a small percentage of overall federal spending. The priorities identified in this proposal for some of the largest cuts - environmental protection, healthcare, energy, science and law enforcement - are essential to the current and future well-being of our economy and communities across the country," Senate Appropriations Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) said in a statement.
I am disturbed that some Republicans have indicated a willingness to allow a government shutdown. No responsible elected official should even consider such an option," he added.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also dismissed it.
Although Democrats have repeatedly urged them to join us in responsibly cutting waste and excess, Republicans have taken a meat ax to the initiatives that invest in our economy and create jobs for the sake of appeasing their base," he said.
An earlier and milder leadership-backed version of the bill cut $32 billion from current levels of spending; the new bill was estimated to cut $58 billion.
Measured against the 2011 Obama budget request, which was never enacted, the earlier leadership bill cut $74 billion and the new bill cuts $100 billion.
Everybody got hit, Interior and Environment Appropriations subcommittee Chairman Mike Simpson said.
Obviously we dont want to close the national parks
we tried to be selective, he said.
$100B is a good start, but only a start. The government is too FAT and should be put on a radical diet. The Dems will scream and we will hear stories in the MSM on how the cruel the Conservatives are but our children and their children will thank us. If we do not get our house in order there will be no future for our children. If we cannot stop the Dems, Progressives and Liberals they will effectively ensure our children will have a lower standard of living and condemn them to perpetual debt and hyper inflation.
Hope they pulled the plugs on obozocare, NPR and the NEA for starters.
Pray for Egypt
Why the leadership plans on caving, just like you it is all for show. Next time vote third party.
Face it YOU PEOPLE - you all thought that the Tea Party would cave in, once they made it to DC. Well they didn’t!!!
$100B is still a small number, but the starting point is also very small. If you rule out defense, border patrol, Social Security, Medicare, Interest on the Debt, and several other Constitutional items (like courts), there is not a whole heck of a lot left to cut from.
...and what is left to cut from will FEEL IT, because their cuts will be BIG, percentage-wise. The TEA PARTY means business - they did not come to Washington for the night life and they ARE showing that.
As to the future - the big ticket items of Social Security and Medicare are where the savings MUST come from, but it will be very tough to tell grandpa that he has to get a 32 foot Winnebego, rather than the 37 foot one that he expects to get, with the government chipping in the difference through Social Security...but that is the ONLY way to make some serious inroads into the deficit.
(p.s., we can do the Ron Paul dance and cut the military...but that just gets us back into wars as our supply lines get threatened...so it costs more in the end)
I hate to throw cold water on you, but $100B is peanuts. It should have been $1T for openers. I’ve said it a million times, and the offer is still open: I could balance the federal budget in one hour without a tax increase-—and I would relish every minute of it. The House Republicans are a bunch of pussies.

It’s only a cut if we actually spend $100 billion less this year than we did last year. I’ll believe it when I see it.
The department of agriculture has two buildings in DC. Two! Fully three quarters of that staff could be eliminated. The dept. of Veterans Affairs should be rolled back into Defense. I could go on.
Cut the Whitehouse budget to $1 and see how much waygu beef the fat-butt slob Michelle can buy.

I heard you the first time. Sure, I could also find $1T, but even on this site, try suggesting that Social Security be treated as a WELFARE PROGRAM, rather than what it is (theft from one generation to another than cannot even vote now...and then another that hasn’t even been born) - and see what happens to you.
So, if you take SS off, I guess take Medicare off for the same reason, take debt interest off, take most of the military spending off, where are you getting the $1T from, and be specific please, since you did make the claim.
I thought it was supposed to be $100 billion just for January. If we come up with an additional $100 billion in cuts each month every month for the next 12 months, our deficit will still be higher than it was the last year Republicans controlled the House.
As I said, give me the job. I’ll do it. Give me the job of balancing the federal budget, with no strings attached, and I will do it. And I will enjoy it. And nothing is off the table, especially Social Security. Just give me the job, I’m volunteering for it, and I want it more than anything in the world.
I hear you...except that we don’t have a monarchy here. I have no doubt that you could do it, with everything fair game. But the Tea Party guys have to play in the DC world...and it’s tough just to freeze spending, much less cut it.
Also, I was reading elsewhere that the $100B cut is over the 7 months left in the fiscal year - it would be $170B cut if over 12 months, and with their limitations on what they can cut people will SCREAM!!!!!!!.
...and one other thing - $170B comes out to just about $500 dollars for every man, woman, and child. It is real money - it just looks a lot smaller, given the condition that Democrats left us in.
They reduced the 2011 projected annual deficit from $1.5 TRILLION to $1.4 TRILLION.
This should give us several additional months before the USA collapses into a Marxist dictatorship. Thanks, Republicans.

Put the federal beast back into its cage.
Whoo hoo! And what would Dingy Harry know about 'meat axes'?
