Poll: Sheriff Joe Leads AZ-SEN Primary Race
TPM ^ | 2/14/11 | Evan Santoro

It's too soon to crown anyone Arizona's next Senator -- but on the same day Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) announced his intent to run, a new poll of Grand Canyon state Republicans shows Sheriff Joe Arpaio leading the field to replace the retiring Sen. Jon Kyl (R).

Arpaio has not announced his intention to run for the open Senate seat next year, though there's long been speculation that Arpaio -- an absolute rockstar among the anti-immigration set in the GOP -- is interested in higher office. His name has been mentioned among those that might run for Kyl's old seat, and it's certain he'd enter the race with significant financial support from his national allies.

Roll Call's David Drucker breaks the news that Arpaio's statewide Republican support would be strong as well. The poll from Summit Consulting Group shows Arpaio with a narrow lead over Flake, who just made his run for Senate official on Monday.

The numbers: Arpaio leads with 21% support, Flake comes in second with 17%. Former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R), who briefly gave Sen. John McCain a scare during the 2012 Senate primary, before being crushed by McCain on primary day, came in third with 16.6%.

We could use 50 Sheriff Joes in the Senate. Then again, every county in the country could use a sheriff like him too.

Senator Arpaio has a nice sound to it....

Jeff Flake needs to be dispatched immediately. Arizonans cannot be that stupid and vote for the friend of the Mexican Drug Cartels and Luis Guitterrez? Flake would be suicide for Arizonans if he was in the Senate

I’m a big fan of Sheriff Joe’s but he’d be 80 when going into office if he wins, I don’t see him running.

Sheriff Joe has long been the most popular politician in AZ, by a long chalk. Were he to announce for senator, the race would be over, and he would not even need to campaign.

But he won’t. The minute he did so, the federal Just Us Department would immediately launch the biggest federal investigation ever made, and he would be indicted for every crime since Judas Iscariot, by a rotten federal grand jury, likely assembled entirely from former ACORN branch managers.

Democrats and the left bitterly hate Sarah Palin, but Joe Arpaio goes beyond raw, bitter and burning hate for them. He makes them deeply afraid. They would do anything, break any law, use every vile trick in the book to attack him.

They would attack him worse than they ever attacked Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or either Bush. Which says a lot about him.

Were he to run on a presidential ticket with Sarah Palin, Democrats would throw themselves off bridges. Some of their billionaires would spend their entire fortunes to stop them.

Because between Joe Arpaio and Sarah Palin, socialism would end in the US. It would be over and done with. 100 years of “progressivism” would be down the toilet. All their schemes and plans would be forfeit.

Maybe the next President could make him Attorney General.

Give him 2 years and he'd have that place cleaned out, half the Democrat leadership either indicted or already convicted, the all litter picked off the highways of America by pink pantied prisoners earning their keep instead of enjoying it..

Agreed. As AG he could and I'm sure would do our country a great service. It may take him two years just to get DOJ straightened out after Holder.

How does he stand on social issues?

He loves animals and is highly involved in anti-dog fighting and other anti-animal abuse organizations.
He was just a guest speaker at an animal shelter fundraiser.

Would be great as a senator. Would be even better as a governor because he’d be the executive instead of one-in-100.

Either way, I wish him the best.

Why do they always ignore that illegal part of the immigration discussion.

Can you give me some more info on these negatives for Flake? I’m not in AZ but this the first I’ve heard he isn’t conservative on border and other issues.
