$60 billion. Call me underwhelmed. At that rate we’ll have a handle on this deficit in about 1000 years.
Don't miss the salient points: It's an actual cut for the first time that I can remember. There has been no budget for this fiscal year - it has been a "do as you have been doing and the money will be there" situation; this set of cuts is between now and the end of September. They have defunded the spending on ObamaCare.
In short, some good things and the first time in my memory when a cut meant a cut vs. a lower rate of increase.
It looks like the Democrats think that another government shutdown will go their way again. By keeping this at minimum cuts we can win the PR battle or if we can’t there is no hope. Start small and see how it goes over.
I totally agree. This is a pittance.
We don't actually know what the true deficit is, since Obama and his minions continue to pour money out the windows to their beneficiaries.
I have seen estimates that the deficit will top $4 trillion by the end of the year. If so, $60 billion is only 1.5% of the deficit.
This is a milquetoast effort. The House can do better; they're just afraid for their jobs if they cut more. They should fear them for cutting less.
The joke of the week. Dramatic? What idiot wrote that headline. That is like a ‘zero cut’ in spending.
The GOP House leadership is showing its true colors, amoeba gray. They voted against anogther $22 billion in cuts. They refused to allow Steve King's amendment to defund ObamaCare and overall seem asleep at the switch. In this period of time in 2009, the Obama/Reid/Pelosi Democrats had passed the Porkulus bill and were moving ahead on all fronts.
Where are the subpoenas? Where's the outrage over Obama ignoring Federal court orders on ObamaCare and on the drilling in the Gulf? Where's the action?
I'll agree with Michelle Obama, "Let's Move". Get rolling!! Take action!! Go! GO! GOOOO!!!!
Where's the urgency?
Me too.
60 billion out of 1,600 billions. 3.75% cut from the one year budget deficit leaves 96.25% of it still there, and it's characterized as "double meat axe".
This bill is for current year spending only, not the FY 2012 budget. This is a good start. The real cuts must come next year, though.
This is a little bitty piece of a large Iceberg...Ryan plans much much more....
I, for one, am happy we are on the right road.
