Perhaps it’s as simple as having some kind of drive or delusion of being a hero. I really do think that’s at least one thing that motivates McPain. He wants to be seen as a man for all seasons, a statesman who rises to the top to calm and resolve disputes. It’s selfish. It’s about them personally, not the people who elected them. I think that’s one reason why McPain supports shamnesty. He wants the wetbacks and the people who employ them to admire and adore him.

That's a great explanation. These WI "compromisers" are not looking out for their constituents, just trying to build onto their own legacy.
