Alabamans steaming on tanker deal

Jerry Cornfield

It's no surprise that today's decision on the tanker didn't sit well in Alabama.

U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby stopped short of implying corruption was involved.

"I’m disappointed but not surprised," Shelby said in coverage on al.com. . "Only Chicago politics could tip the scales in favor of Boeing’s inferior plane. EADS clearly offers the more capable aircraft. If this decision stands, our warfighters will not get the superior equipment they deserve.”

Here are more samples from this story.

"The U.S. Department of Defense, in not awarding the aerial refueling tanker contract to EADS North America today, has made a egregious error and America’s military men and women are ultimately the biggest losers," said a statement from the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce.

And this from their president, Win Hallett: “We are completely shocked by the news that EADS did not prevail in this competition. The EADS tanker has greater capacity, more advanced technology and a proven track record. Given the history of this competition over the past seven years, and that we won the last contest three years ago, we are disappointed to see that the Air Force chose an inferior product for our war fighters."

Credit Mobile Mayor Sam Jones for taking the high road. “Though we are disappointed about the decision today, we know that EADS has the best aircraft and Mobile is the right place for manufacturing it. Mobile put forth a united effort that will hopefully lead to

Deep red Kansas got a large share of the pie, as well.

Is the first letter in the companies name an abbreviation of EUROPE?
Screw them, I care not where the factory is located.
The union curse in Boeing can be handled.
Forget the euro-trash for fuel freighters!!

Tough luck, Senator. Boeing aircraft were protecting this nation before you were born, and in every conflict since...

European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company

I wonder why the senator wants to give the project to a bunch of foreigners?

I don’t think Washington state is very important in this deal. The fact that Boeing moved it’s corporate headquarters to Chicago a while back and is now local to Obama and the boys (and girls) is probably having more of an impact in this somehow.

The only thing Boeing makes in Chicago is phone calls. This contract represents in the neighborhood of 50,000 jobs both directly and indirectly in Washington and Kansas. That’s a good thing.

This contract should rightfully go to Boeing. EADS is a POS foreign company that has expanded into the U.S. for the sole purpose of grabbing a slice of the federal contract and military pie. U.S. must maintain an infrastructure to support defense manufacturing in case the need arises in the future. Regardless of where EADS has their factories located, their interests and their loyalties are not directed toward the U.S. or the citizens.

I hate to say this, but at some point Alabama has to join the rest of the country, rather than be taken in by some foreign charlatans (like Indiana with their Toll Road sellout, under Mitch Daniels).

Whether or not it means a few thousand assembly jobs, there are a LOT MORE people in this country that would prefer that our military manufacturing base remain in the US, as much as possible. The idea that Airbus would be providing our tanker planes, with some minor US assistance is EMBARRASSING to most of us conservatives.

We’ve got to respect the Air Force decision and move on because further delay puts our military in jeopardy.””

This is how an ADULT responds, even if he is wrong...he is still classy and still loves this country.

Chicago is the corporate headquarters and where they file their taxes. This is a Rahm payoff on 2 days after election day!

Not until you asked the question, so I checked.

European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company - EADS N.V. (the company and together with its subsidiaries, the “EADS Group”) is a Dutch company, which is listed in France, Germany and Spain.

Also, based on the list at this website, they have many locations in the US... but not in Chicago. Their mistake.

EADS in the US

It’s a conspiracy I tell ya! Whatever. You know what is more likely? That the Air Force wanted to buy a plane from an American company they’ve got an 80+ year relationship with. And where would you rather have them file taxes, Chicago or the Netherlands?
