So, I'm to give up the little bit of Social security that the government owes me on retirement?

We will probably be means-tested right out of our social security because we saved the best we could for retirement. Our measley social security is a pittance compared to government pensions. Why are we to give up social security when government workers get a lot more money and get to retire much earlier than us. When they means test the government workers, then I'll be more willing to give up the social security that we paid in all our lives.

No one mentions that the government robbed social security in the 60s under President Johnson for his great society program. I wonder how solvent the system would be if the government hadn't “borrowed” our money back then.

There are plenty of other ways to get us out of debt. How about quit spending on crappy programs that we don't agree with. How about getting Obama to give back the rest of his slush fund? How about getting rid of Obama care and doing real reform? How about starting to privatize a portion of Social Security? How about allowing this country to use it's natural resources?
How about pulling out of the UN?

The numbers I’ve seen, however, suggest that most people get back what they put in, plus interest, plus a billion dollars.

I hate to bust your bubble but I draw social security. Basically, I will get back what I put in with NO interest.

Never mind Boehner. Read down in the article and you will see the Senate is the death of us.

All I have to do is listen to Joe Biden speak for a while and I have to agree 100% with your friend on that.

Until last November my Congresscritter was Lincoln Davis. I think he and Biden were twins separated at birth. I've had many face to face encounters with Davis and his IQ might be just a wee bit lower than Biden's. (assuming such a thing is possible).....

That’s a good idea which will never be adopted. Too much nuance. Govt can only do “one size fits all.” And if the fit is too tight: tough.

Yeah, welfare begging bums (see Wisconsin) always give up their welfare quietly and willingly. Where have you been?

Actually, the whole SS pyramid scheme was put in place before I was born; There really was a "trust fund" for the first four years of SS collections; then the greedy bastids in Congress rolled it all into the general fund and spent every freaking dime of it every year; and generations of Congressmen failed to "fix" it in any way except to raise the retirement age and the cap gradually.

I didn't have a choice whether or not to participate - the bastids stole my money somewhere in the six figure range over the 40 years I worked. If you amortize the real value of every dollar taken relative to its real worth in each year, plus add in a modest interest, then, yes, I figure the value of my "contributions" over that 40 year period are now worth 20 times the value in terms of today's dollars.

Anybody who suggests that Congress now take away part of the SS payments that people are now getting is deluded; SS will have to be gradually phased out in a manner that doesn't penalize those whose money was stolen over their working lifetimes. And when I go down to the bank to get some money from my savings account, they do not do any "means" testing.

SS can be saved, along with medicare.

What about getting rid of other worthless government waste ... Homeland Security???, Outrageous government Pensions, Foreign Aid to worthless countries, Benefits to illegals (except EMERGENCY life or death treatment), Money spent on the UN. Plenty of money can be saved. No one has the guts to go after actual waste, and instead, as always, we try to score cheap political points to make some in the base happy (the right and the left)

Everybody in this country can not be rich, and everybody in this country does not have the means of retiring comfortably, or paying for all medical costs, and this is NOT their fault. Saying that, everybody in this country CAN not be poor and live on entitlements forever expecting everything to be taken care of.

Always two extremes, and nobody with common-sense.

Do you want your pound of flesh, or do you want a free country to live in? Tell me how to have “all obligations paid” and still have a country, or at least a sound financial system. As a country, we are very close to slavery. Those currently dependent upon govt handouts are currently there, and that is somewhere near 60% of the citizens. Wait until the money system takes a licking and quits ticking. People will simply sell their souls or the chastity of their youngest daughter to survive. Look at what happens in other countries. We as human beings are no different than the people that once enslaved blacks, grabbed bar patrons to man ships, or burned witches. I am not saying you would do such foul things to survive, but you and I both know that there are literally millions in this country that will. We have to do something drastic. We have to sacrifice an entire generation, maybe two of them to straighten this mess out. I find it strange that people will buck, complain and fight having to rely on family to survive. These same people will easily take from their neighbor, because it is owed them. No matter that the promises given, were impossible dreams.

The trouble is entitlements are now a majority of government expenditures. (I think I saw a pie chart recently that had it at 58%) Defense was only at 22%, and discretionary expenditures was again around 20 or 22%. Discretionary expenditures is basically the administrative part of the government. Homeland security is probably funded by a combination of defense and discretionary budget line items. Obamacare and other Zero-Reid-Pelosi wet dreams are even more entitlements. If you add in state entitlements like benefits and pensions its all horribly unsustainable, at some point it will all come crashing down. Entitlement reform(and it must be reduction!) is the only financial reform that will be more then pretend. I don't care who enacts the reform it simply has to be done. If anyone believes that Zero will do anything more then give window dressing to it, I got a bridge in Brooklyn for them. He can't alienate the “rent seeking” class he represents and which his whole life has been.

Wow. Nice pile of words! A great pile. A great big steaming pile.

Social Security was required, by law, to be a self-funded retirement supplement. What was paid in was understood...no, contracted!... to be in trust with your name on it. You are guaranteed the payout, no matter what, because you entered into a contract, albeit unwillingly.

Now I have well-meaning folks as yourself coming and telling me I need to forfeit the trust because I had the responsibility to treat it as the supplement it was intended to be. Because I saved to self-find my retirement, I get to lose a key piece of it.

Screw you. It's mine because I paid for it. If you want to means-test yours, go right on ahead, but I insist on payment of the debt to me.

Do you want your pound of flesh, or do you want a free country to live in?

A bullshit bargain, go peddle it to someone with less experience.

The best thing that could be done for Social Security is a)raise the retirement age to around 70 years for the 35 year old today,
b)get a bit more strict with just who, exactly, is disabled. Take a real close look at that “bipolar” thing and
c)for all social security payroll deductions AND the employer matches to REALLY put aside into a special account, buy gubmint obligations with it if not wanting to invest in stock market...and DON’T LET THEM SPEND IT.

And d) Must be a US citizen to collect

I worked for 39 years. I’ve known for the entire time, even at 16 years old, that this was a ponzi scheme. My 12.4% per year has been stolen and given to someone else. I’m really, really unhappy about it and have been from the first dollar.

It was the “greatest generation” that began this world class theft by paying people who did not put in, and after than, the ponzi was on. The “greatest generation” voted for that socialist FDR who began this inter-generational thief. I’ve assumed I will never see a dollar, and still expect that will be case. This is one of many, many reasons why I will never, ever vote RAT.

The system is broken and broke. To fix it is to end it, people who put in nothing or trivial amounts should be cut off of Socialist Security now. Illegals cut off, now. Means test the people who are receiving it today and cut off those can have resources to take care of themselves - the rest get to keep receiving, but with limited cost of living adjustments. Do the math to figure out how much and how long we need to pay off those peoople, and everyone else (like me, and I’m about to retire) get nothing. Too bad, soo sad - there is no money, we’re broke. Government must then begin sharply reducing the FICA taxation rate until it goes to zero when those who keep receiving are gone. Ramp up tax deductions into ROTH IRAs as FICA tax rate goes down.

Tough love, but let’s get on with it already.

Commiecare denies the eldery health care and now there will be “bipartisan” support to cut them off their income in retirement so they can die more quickly to assist in the “revolution.”

“Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has privately assured President Obama that House Republicans will not attack him if he makes a proposal to reform entitlement spending, according to sources familiar with the offer.”

He won’t make a move until he’s guaranteed bell-jar protection? What a girl!
A LITTLE girl at that. What a Pee-Wee Herman! What a worthless jerk to have for a President!
