Fitzgerald said Senate GOP remains unified

Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said this afternoon Senate Republicans remain unified behind the guv's budget repair bill.

Sen. Rob Cowles was quoted in this morning's Green Bay Press-Gazette that Republicans should be willing to meet Dems halfway on the impasse and stressed the economic concessions for public employees are the real key of the budget repair bill.

Republicans then met in a more than two-hour caucus that pushed back the start of today's 11 a.m. floor session to after 1:30 p.m.

But Fitzgerald said Republicans remain rock solid and there were no signs of softening within the caucus. He said the meeting took so long this morning so Republicans could go over the details of talks between the guv's office and two Senate Dems on the impasse.

Republicans went back to caucus following the brief floor period.

Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, also charged the recall effort against some of his GOP colleagues had links to the White House and national labor forces. Fitzgerald said Dems were worried unions will be weakened by the budget repair bill and would not be able to deliver politically for the president next fall.

"We're no longer dealing with the people who have been in and around the Capitol," Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said the Senate would likely take up the resolutions to fine missing Dems tomorrow, saying they were pulled back today because they weren't ready.

I see zero chance Gov. Walker will cave. Senate Republicans, not quite zero, but this sounds encouraging.

These guys have to stand together.

In other news, Republican State Sen. Dan Kapanke said he expects opponents will get enough signatures to trigger a recall election but added that he was undeterred by the effort and remained committed to the guv's budget repair bill.

I stand to applaud Gov. Walker and the Republicans that are holding their convictions and staying the course.

“Is Walkers going to destroy the football players union too?”

Sure. If the football players union has a monopoly to sell cable TV to the public and if it forces all residents to join the union and pay dues.

These so called collective bargaining “rights” are nothing more than union monopolies to sell health insurance to school districts, to collect union dues from every state public worker, and to have a monopoly to unionize public worker sectors. The unions even force the state to act as their collection agency to collect union dues.

If Walker does not prevail, the unions will own the country and run amok. Then we will truly have Chicago style “gangster government” from coast to coast. That would be a truly pathetic end to a great country.

My fear is the Dems will stay away long enough to get those signatures. Then what? I wish they were passing bills while the Dems are away. Two hour caucus? Delayed to getting to the floor, what was that about?

I see Bloomberg wanted to lay off the teachers in the rubber rooms in NY first before laying off other teachers who are not awaiting a hearing. The UNIONS said NO way. Said you have to lay off by order of seniority.

The milwaukee Urinal Sates that in the emails as late as this afternoon that Walker is willing to compromise. Now this report sates that the Republicans are united. So basically what the hell is it in Wisconsin, Yes or No or maybe or is everyone there just pulling the tabs on Miller and leaning back and drinking or what. make up your minds will you already or is it the beer talking.

By the way Republicans separate the bill from the budgetary contarsaints (sp) and move on with it already.

Gee, having grown up in Wisconsin cow tipping and sneaking in to the neighbors pool at night and skinny dipping was more fun than the politicians in Wisconsin facilitating to and fro as the wind blows back and forth.

Why aren’t the passing bills that don’t require 20 members, FreeP Fitzgerald and tell them to get moving on passing legislation now, enough of the BS waiting for the Dems to show!

They need to stop dragging this out because that will strengthen the union position through a weary public. Reagan fired the ATCers fast and hard. I don’t presume to know what they should or can do but I do know that the longer it drags out, the worse for the Gov.
