MOGADISHU, Somalia – An attempt by Somali security forces to free a Danish family from a pirate gang on Thursday turned deadly after the would-be rescuers walked into an ambush, a pirate and a security official said.

I have mixed feelings on this.

I’m not sure I would spend any energy rescuing this family. They are so stupid, they would probably turn right around and get re-captured.

Read the link. They sailed right into the open arms of pirates despite the warnings.

Have you ever read the State Department travel warnings? There are LOTS of places the warn you to avoid. I and my family have safely lived in several.

Some of these pirate attacks have occurred 400 or 500 miles off the coast. These attack are in an area you must pass through to get to the Suez canal.

I am neither a sailor nor a shipping magnate. But even I have known for many months, if not years, that anything within HUNDREDS of nautical miles from Somalia is NOT SAFE.

Sorry, but I just don’t buy that “oh, but they were 500 miles from the coast” bullcrap anymore.

Nothing that I’ve seen. Hope they’re OK, but didn’t they have some teenage girls with them? Not too hard to guess what the pirates are doing to them.
