More than 1,000 young American women have been raped or sexually assaulted in the last decade while serving as Peace Corps volunteers in foreign countries, an ABC News 20/20 investigation has found. In some cases, victims say, the Peace Corps has ignored safety concerns and later tried to blame the women who were raped for bringing on the attacks.
Why are we wasting time, money, people over anything in Africa? Why don’t we just let the place rot and go further to hell?
Africa and it’s people make choices and usually bad ones. They’ve been doing it for centuries.
Some great resources, some great people, but what has ever changed there in the last couple of hundred years? It’s worse than ever. It’s not our fault, it’s theirs and all the fault of all the lousy leftist, commie socialist scum in the world. I’m tired of all the people that won’t wise up and help themselves.

Hey...lighten up on calling for de-funding the Peace Corps. Many many misty-eyed LIB moonbats feel it is the last vestige of their beloved “Camelot”. Goodness...aren’t LIBs irritatingly disgusting?
For all of our supposedly multicultural sensitivity, the US government refuses to acknowledge that most people in the world still think men and women are fundamentally different and ought to act like it. We send female volunteers into situations where the local people cannot imagine any decent woman would go, so it is hardly surprising that these volunteers are not treated decently. Official government solution: just pretend it isn’t happening.
The record indicates an average of 100 a year. Based on that record, I tend to agree. Those women are seriously judgement deficient, or totally unconscious. Why would any expose themselved to that risk?

It is foolish for an American woman to be unarmed in America.
Outside of America, it is borderline suicidal (unless we're talking about Estonia or Antarctica).
The Peace Corps is not about serving others. It’s about upper middle class white young adults using other people’s money to feel good about themselves. Some of them (including one couple I know) end up getting a nice, extended vacation in Europe. Meanwhile, people working as waiters, janitors, clerks, etc. are taxed to pay for the entire absurd enterprise, including all the bureaucrats that it employs.
In re gorgeous liberal blonde, it sounds like The Peace Corps was lacking in providing some basic necessities for its volunteers. Oh, but providing a shower stall would be imposing one’s values. Foreign service is all about introducing one’s values to the natives! I understand that there can be problems when missionaries add to the gospel, but I wouldn’t want a wife or daughter of mine to be part of such a spectacle.
All Americans should be armed.
All the free food and clothes dumped in Africa puts locals out of business. Dependence doesn’t work there any more than it works here. There are also colonial scars. The British taxed the locals in pounds, and so the natives had to work for them to earn pounds. Local economies were converted from subsistence farming to export crops. Granted, this was 50 years ago. The gospel transformed Europe from filthy, bloodthirsty savages to its heights. Europe and North America are headed for Third World status because we have Jesus Christ as our Lord and have chosen Baal, Astarte, and Reason as our masters.

Just because something calls itself "Christian" doesn't mean that it bears the remotest resemblance to "Christ-like" (the real definition of "Christian")...
ok, I didn’t know that. However I thought she was an interesting author enough to check on her writing, and that same article has been posted at least 20 other places, including here at FR long ago.

That essay has been around a long time, and posted in any number of places. I first read it about four years ago.
I just googled the name and posted the first site that had it.
As far as I can tell, however, it’s bang on the money. Everything that can be tried in Africa, has been tried, and the results never change.
There’s no saving the place and I, for one, have no intention of trying.

In 1970 I was a public pool life guard in San Antonio. The boss ranked us by height and the tall guys went to the worst pools except no white guys were sent to black pools.
Every year several young white girls insisted upon being hired. The boss tried to dissuade them because they always got raped - within 2 days. They would insist and he would finally hire a couple and send them to the nicer public pools. They were all raped.
Since I was the 2nd tallest white dude,I was sent to the worst barrio pool. I lasted 6 weeks. I had 1 gun, 2 knives, broken bottles and chains pulled on me as well as 6 or so punks trying to jump me a couple of times.
I was hoping to teach the children to swim and speak English. I was fired for beating the crap out of a punk.
I had worked in New Orleans in the black ghettos in 68-70 but the barrio was in many ways worse because they were better organized. I believe my friends, except for the marines, who went to Viet Nam were safer than I was in both New Orleans and San Antone.
A Pox on all their houses. I see little hope.
