From the commentary here:
We love the idea of a First Lady in Lanvin. And we love that Shelley takes risks. But we don't love this dress on her. Like most women who don't wear clothes for a living, she finds it difficult to wear the edgier or off-the-beaten-paths looks. Not that Lanvin is cutting edge or anything, just that the draping and the unusual sleeve/shoulder/neckline treatment firmly place this frock outside the "effortless" category and add bulk to her shoulders in a less-than-flattering way.
In addition, like a lot of women of color, solid black doesn't really set her off unless she's dressing it up with a print or some interesting jewelry. It doesn't look bad on her; just a little bleh.
