Sorry for asking what may be a dumb question, but is the devastation we see in these photos and videos mostly the result of the earthquake itself, or the tsunami that followed?

I watched dozens of videos (mostly cellphone captures) late last night, and DURING the earthquake, buildings shook and swayed, BUT in all of it, NOT ONE PIECE OF GLASS OR METAL fell off those buildings.

When the Tsunami rolled in, very few buildings were left standing.

They have some great earthquake engineering in Japan. When buildings fall, they are often older buildings.

All that said, I wouldn’t want to have been in these. Although I am sure some Freepers will point out that it would have been relatively safe, IMHO I would have died of a heart attack. When I go up in a skyscraper on a nice day I swear I can feel them moving.
