Well, I’d just as soon have a really good bull**** meter than a third arm.

I vaguely remember something about the elk population or reindeer maybe? Either being wiped out in an area or unfit to eat.

It made their noses glow red.

Look up the Japanese Fire Balloons from WWII, that will give you an idea.

If the half-life is long enough, some (tiny) amount will be anywhere. For a long time I could see excess tritium in soil from above ground tests, and I still see plutonium, which is synthetic, so must come from nuke tests.

more than 1000 nukes were detonated around the world up to now, and we’re still here.

What about those giant ants in the Mojave Desert?

“I find the hysteria rather humorous. (except for those poor souls hear the plant)

When I was a kid, both the US and Russia regularly detonated large atmospheric nuclear devices.

Somehow I survived.”

Guess you were not a “Down-Winder”.
The U.S. nuke test did have consequences for some of our citizens.

“Something tells me the near future may not be a good time to fly.”

Flying exposes you to at least 200 micro-R/hour, and can be lots more depending on altitude, latitude, and solar activity.

Some readings over 780 uR/Hr have been seen.

Here is an airline dose calculator:

http://www.airlinepilotcentral.com/frame/radiation_profile.html

1 Sievert= 100 REM

So adding a little cesium dust to the air won’t make a lot of difference, in terms of additional dose. It didn’t after Chernobyl.

A sample of the 85,000 teeth was used to locate cancer survivors (through current addresses) and those who died of cancer (through official death records). In December 2010, the International Journal of Health Services published findings of the study, i.e. that “Boomers” born 1959-1961 who died of cancer had Sr-90 levels in their teeth more than twice (+122%) greater than those the same age who are alive and healthy. (13) While more research is needed to estimate casualties, it appears likely that the government figure of 15,000 U.S. cancer deaths from fallout is quite low.

What about those giant ants in the Mojave Desert?

I was 10 years old when I went to the movies in downtown Needles, California, a four-block walk from our home on Broadway Street. One Saturday, I went there to see Them

I don't think I made it past the first ten minutes or so. I never saw the giant ants. This creepy hand crawling around the edge of an open door was enough for me! Ran all the way home, and when no one was home at that moment, I stayed outside in the yard until someone arrived.

There was a story out yesterday that S.F.P.D. were busy trying to get the homeless off the beaches due to the tsunami advisery.

I figured they could use the bath.

Eggsackly. To answer the question, Prevailing winds blow to the northeast, out to three thousand miles of open sea.

Given the minute quantities released so far, you would be safer in Japan than you were in Utah in the 1950s.

It will come towards the US like the tsunamis did, I would think. We were in eastern WA when the Chernobyl cloud went by. Just stayed inside that afternoon. (Speaking authoritatively as a musician...), I think whatever leaked will not impact the US.

That’s nothing look at these numbers: Between 1951 and 1992, there were a total of 928 announced nuclear tests at Nevada Test Site. Of those, 828 were underground. Sixty-two of the underground tests included multiple, simultaneous nuclear detonations, adding 93 detonations and bringing the total number of NTS nuclear detonations to 1,021, of which 921 were underground. The Nevada Test Site was the primary testing location of American nuclear devices; 126 tests were conducted elsewhere (many at the Pacific Proving Grounds in the Marshall Islands).
