But you’d never gather that from the cited article, where a potential 3 to 4 percent annual increase in food costs are grounds for Gotterdamerung, but 30 percent MONTHLY increases in gas costs are minor inconveniences.

You are most certainly welcome. The problem is primarily with corn, soybeans, and rapeseed (canola), so far, but as more and more species are modified (contaminated wheat has been found in areas in Canada, from experimental fields, moving into nearby fields), it will become a bigger problem.
Now that IS a deal, haha. Be glad you have such charitable in laws, we aren’t all so lucky, lol.

That’s a good buy, thanks for the heads up. Someone else mentioned buying from a paper supply co. There’s cleaning business nearby that offers a reallly big discount on buying something like $45 for 200 rolls (or something like that), but I’m not brave enough to take that big of a plunge (figuratively, and possibly literally!) just yet. It could be as rough as sandpaper :)

I should add, that what I meant is that the big problem of contamination, and Monsanto suing for seed cleaning, is with the crop types I’ve mentioned. The heirloom seed contamination is varied. I’ve seen notices from some online supplies saying that certain varieties of several crop types are no longer sold because the fields they come from are contaminated, but I don’t remember the plants they listed at the time (there are articles out there about the problem though). I’m planting all heirlooms this year, except *maybe* some cherry tomatoes since I did like the supersweet 100, and tomatoes are self pollinating. But it’s still undecided, I tried some pink brandywine determinate heirlooms, and they were delicious, grew dozens of large fruit, and when winter came, we picked 2 1/2 grocery sacks of green tomatoes and had ripe tomatoes for almost 2 months (subject to possible incorrect memory disclaimer, lol) after (we’d put them in a partially open plastic bag when we wanted them ripened, the same as we do with grocery tomatoes, and leave the ones we wanted later out to breathe).
There's one item I will never skimp on. It's my Charmin Ultra. On sale or not, if it's time to restock the cabinet, there's no room on my shelves for turnpike toilet paper.

I love tomatoes. I live in the “high desert” of SoCal and it can get hot. Managing water vs. sunlight [heat] is sketchy. Last time I tried tomatoes I didn’t get that many, they didn’t grow to full size and those that did germinate, only grew to about 1/3 of normal.
I read up on pruning of sucker leaves, plant food, etc. I think it was the dirt, not enough nutrients.
I’m thinking it’s way past time to figure out this gardening thing. I like vegetables and the fresher the better.
We’re going to put in a box planter in an area of the backyard that we don’t use and see how we do.
I’m not much of a green thumb, but willing to give it a shot. I’ll go talk with the folks who run a local nursery and see what advice they can give about prepping the soil (clay really), etc.
I’ll keep these tomato types on my list of plants to attempt, they sound good.

Nonsense. A 4% increase is like a $2.99 item going up to $3.11. Over the course of a year. That's not even noticeable to most people.
What we are seeing is substantially >4%.
Good luck to you! There are some master gardners on the weekly gardening ping, if you’re interested. One thing about tomatoes is that they like heat, and like to be deep. You can bury them all the way to the leave’s and the stem will turn into root, and give you’re plant a big boost in the season. I tried burying mine last year, but they were so tall. I knew it would help, but I didn’t want to dig a foot down (plus some were in pots). One tip I never thought of is that if you do buy a seedling (instead of seeds—the growing season is short in Northern Utah, where I live), you can dig a channel and just lay it down, they keep the top portion above dirt and it will do all the better. Getting soil tested at a local University extension office is usually under $10, and I hear very, very worthwhile. (I will this year, but have to wait for the soil to dry from the snow).

I have been buying this at $10.00 at Wally World. Just checked Friday night and it is still at $10.00 around here...am now stocked up.
