...the Fukushima 50 were some of the bravest people on the planet. If there was anything they could do they would stay to do it, even if it cost them their lives. The fact that they are abandoning the plant means there is nothing left to do but let it run its course. You're right - they were brave - they stood and fought knowing the sacrifice they were making...

The worst thing about this is that it means that Shepard Smith has been right!

If they put it on floatation devices, they could shove the whole thing out into the Pacific.

Bull, it is not in control at all. Surely you jest. Nobody knows what is happening with any of those reactors at this point.

Death via a nuclear holocaust, be it bombs, missiles or meltdown. Just thought to bring it up to further scare the heck out of people.

I hope those exposed to really high levels of radiation were rotated out. We used to burn through pipe-fitters pretty quickly based on conservative standards. In reality, the body could take a lot more. I am sure they rotated workers from all of their plants and hopefully there has been international presences. I really hope with proper monitoring, nobody will die from exposure.

Um didn’t they drop concrete onto the exposed stuff at Chernobyl with helicopters? Is that the option now?

I watched news conference live on NHK. The spokesman said all workers have left the plant due to high radiation. There are NO WORKERS at the plant except for 2 workers that were unaccounted for.

Old design, from the 70s. Newer designs, as I understand it, put the spent fuel underground in separate concrete containment. But not at Fukushima.

Problem is not the reactors at this point. Its the spent fuel pools - which contain several cores of fuel - which are open to the atmosphere - and which are on fire or soon will be.I think you might be correct. Unless they can get some water into those pools, things will deteriorate drastically.

I don’t know a thing about these reactors, but that sure does seem like it’s worth something.

Maybe we need to send Al Gore to the Nuclear Plant site and have them complain about Global Warming. They can have a Global Warming conference inside one of the containment buildings.
Does Al Gore have the intelligence to say no to such a proposal?

This kills nuclear energy in this country for the forseeable future. No amount of reasoned arguments will overcome this and any politician who tries will be committing career suicide. I doubt even Rushs intellectual power. will be able to turn the tide.I don't know if it kills nuclear energy, but it does reveal that there were not adequate redundant cooling systems built into that reactor. It's 40 years old. Perhaps the new designs are better. But all designs now need to be reviewed for safety.

I think we are all VERY concerned, Conor! (Some secretly, and some quite verbally.)
This morning on FNC, there was a lady who wanted to get out of Tokyo - and what cost $500 for a flight last month, is now $3,000.00!
Shep Smith and Anderson Cooper may run into some serious food and water shortages, in Tokyo, too. I think all journalists and reporters should get out of there, ASAP.
God Bless those poor people of Japan. My heart is hurting for them.
